Calcium supplement - how much??
« on: January 15, 2014, 10:10:48 PM »

Hi all

I have some calcium supplement which I bought at the time I bought my grey.

I was advised to use this once a day for the first 7 days, then twice a week thereafter.

What is the right amount?  Can my grey be overdosed by the stuff?  He is suffering from wing twitching at the moment (I am guessing this may be a calcium deficiency, only because I have seen this suggested elsewhere), so I'd like to give him a good amount, though not sure how much?  Just been putting a couple of drops in his usual average sized water bowl.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve, iv never had to use calcium sups as iv always converted to a complete pellet diet (vet recommended) that way you don't have to worry if your giving enough sups or even too much
He will also need vitD to process the calcium and u less you can give him half hour everyday of his life of natural sunlight then a uv light specially made for birds is a must
Look on this sight www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk
There's all you need on there and more ;)
As for the calcium amount I'm sure so done that uses it will be along soon,
Once you get the basics in place it won't seem so overwhelming xx

Hi Steve

I hope you don't mind me adding to the conversation, I ve been reading some of your posts .
I feed mine calcium supplements cause mine started plucking a few years ago for no apparent reason.
A costly trip to the vet.
The vet I saw was spot on, Charlie was calcium deficient & had a high zinc level in his blood! ( be careful what painted toys you give them, bird friendly n his cage is zinc free)
The vet advised Harrison's coarse for food, not parrot food from the pet shop with lots of seed & sun flowers in it, also an  avarian light ( must use one specific to birds as otherwise they flicker, which we can't see but bird can) & a calcium supplement which I give every day - 100ml of water & 1 ml liquid supplement, I use Zolcal-D (I use a tiny syringe from the chemist n a little jug). I buy all my supplies from northern parrots I order before 12.00 one day n it arrives the next, some use Scarlett s if never used so can t comment. This is what the vet advised n he has been fine very since.
It is very difficult in the beginning as we ve all got different experiences with birds, & different advice.
Enjoy him, I had mine from a chick, they are very entertaining, mine was chilled n still is, we take him on holiday with us in our motorhome! but remember they are animals n can turn if they receive unwanted attention. You get to know him, by body language n their eyes are a give away too,They want to learn, you can teach him to talk like a child, one simple word or sound, n now mine will answer a questions if you ask him. Xxx

Hi Mrsgonz.. A question for you Did your bird continue to pluck once you gave it calcium supplement ?
I ask this as my young (10 month old ) CAG started chewing his feathers for no reason so I took him straight to the Avian vet on Wed and he took blood sample which showed up that he was calcium deficient. His zinc level was fine. I have had him on Harrisons High Potency Course since he was weaned but didnt realise that I also should have given him a calcium supplement as well as on their package it says that it is not recommended to give them supplements with the pellets. The vet has given me some which I am now giving to him and hoping that once he gets the required amount of Calcium he will stop picking..
