« on: November 27, 2013, 06:34:35 PM »

Hello as you know i had my kiki at the vets the other night as she was not well so they took bloods and they have come back her white blood cells are very low at 0.6 and they said there is no cure for this virus and she doesn't have long to live has any one had experience with this before and if so how did they deal with this I've only had her a few weeks

Actually i've just googled it and it's PBFD, it doesn't automatically cause death from what I read though, is there nothing the vet can try?

I'd drive as far as you need to see if anyone is more interested in helping your bird, the vet seems so dismissive, and really doesn't sound like a sympathetic avian vet. Where abouts are you?

have a read on PBFD, they have something that can prevent but not cure. It is fatal in some cases, and yes it tends to be younger birds by the sounds of it, but i read that some can 'cure' themselves and become immune, some live for 40 years with the virus with a good quality life.

I don't think its just as cut and dried as your vet says. I have no information other than reading up a little last night after you posted, but there's quite a lot to check out. The vet seemed so doom & gloom, which might be the case but it might not too!

Was kiki from a breeder or shop thomas? I cant see anyone taking her from you,  where would she go though as she could pass this virus on to others. Whatever you do dont let her meet or be near other birds, poor kiki. Im so sorry this is happening to you both x

many birds can live with this virus, some for a long time. From what ive read and learned from others about this, birds dont die from this, it lowers the immune system so causes other illnesses which the birds can die from. So with lots of good food, vitamins and tlc, along with treatment for any problems she might have down the line, kiki may have a few years yet. Good luck with the others vets, bless you both  :cheekkiss:
