Do African Greys Need Any Vaccinations Or Worming?
« on: September 20, 2011, 08:07:36 PM »

Hi there

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I was just thinking that my dogs obviously need vaccinations and worming regularly, and it got me wondering if African Greys need anything like this?  Or any kind of flea treatments?

When I first got Alfie, the breeder gave me some vitamins and calcium for him, but he was on a seed diet then, whereas now he's on pellets, so I never gave them to him.  Am I doing the right thing?

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

There is no such thing as a stupid question

Generally, birds who live indoors are free from parasites and don't need vaccinations and deworming like dogs and cats do. Birds that live in aviaries are more prone to contracting parasites and should be treated by an Avian vet. A pelleted diet should cover all the nutrients he needs and if you could supplement his diet with veggies and occasional fruits, that would be great. Calcium should preferably only be given if your Avian vet suspects a deficiency - this can be confirmed with blood tests.

Thanks Karmen, I was a bit worried as I have dogs and, although they are regularly flea treated, I wondered, if they did have a couple of rogue ones, would they jump on Alfie?!

He is over a year now and he is insured, but I have never taken him to a vet.  Do most people take their greys for regular check-ups or is it not necessary unless you notice a problem?

Thanks again for the advice.

I take both mine every year for a health check and I think most other members here do too

Hey Sarah

A lot of people will take their grey for an annual check up each year, as peace of mind.  When they do get ill, they hide it very well, and often any illness is in the late stages before anything is noticed.  Therefore regular checkups sometimes catch things before they develop int anything too serious

Thanks for the advice, I will book Alfie in for a check-up.

One more question!  Can anybody recommend a good vet in the Wiltshire area?

Hi,

Parrots are generally plagued by other types of parasites/diseases, such as mites and fungus. But yes, you certainly should apply general pest control for fleas too.
(You can read here about parrot diseases http://www.realmacaw.com/pages/comdisease.html)

You need to take care though, that you don't allow the dog to get into physical contact with the parrot, other than the obvious safety reason, dogs and cats carry bacteria that are harmful to birds. The flea ointment you use on the dog will also be toxic to the parrot. You need to wash your hands if you handled the dog (before touching your parrot).

We have Rocco registered with an Avian specialist in Swindon. Drove Road told us about them as they dont really do avian work.
