Gurgly belly
« on: May 30, 2015, 08:27:20 AM »

Hi, I'm new here and really pleased to have found such a great looking forum dedicated to african greys. Just wondering if anyone else's bird has a gurgley belly  whenever they turn around to preen? Not sure if this is something I should be concerned about?

Hi Georgie and welcome to the forum. cant say I've ever come across a bird with a rumbly tummy but it may be worth a trip to the vets to put your mind at ease,

I sometimes hear Yvies tummy kind of rumble, usually when she's sat on my shoulder, but it's worth getting checked just in case. Welcome to the forum :)

Thanks for the welcome and for the quick replies  :)

His belly has made the gurgly noise for some months now and I only hear it when he's on/next to me and only when he turns quickly around. He's seems fine though apart from this so I haven't wanted to stress him out taking him to the vets (he hates the vets). Just bought some Avipro plus for him in the hope that the probiotic in it will help.

I've noticed gizmo's belly gurgling occasionally, particularly when she's turning to preen like you describe. I only notice because she sits so close to me. Are his poops normal?

Thanks for the replies Lynn and Kazky. Yeah, his poops look fine I think, just like they always have. He eats a parrot complete diet but mostly just picks out the sunflower seeds. I've tried him on Harrison's pellets but he won't touch them. I also give him fresh fruit and veg daily and usually porridge, or cereal (rice crispies) for breakfast with almond milk. He does of course have the odd naughty treat but nothing really bad like chocolate.

Maybe I'm just worrying unnecessarily then, especially if he isn't the only one who has gurgles. It's just I never used to notice it before.

You can get get a good quality seed mix from scarletts that contains no sunflower seed, they do tend to just pick out the sunflowers which isn't ideal. I wonder if it is diet related as gizmo has a completely different diet to your birdie she's on pellets, sprouted seeds veg & little fruit, I would cut out the rice crispies though they contain lots of sugar, porridge is fine though :)

Hi never heard of this one before :nono:
. Sometimes I do hear our Fester exhale a deep breath  that sounds a little funny
. If your bird wont eat Harrisons have you tried diluting them in a little orange juice & spoon feeding em to him  then reducing the orange juice day by day

Thanks for the recommendation Lynn. He only has a few rice crispies once a week as a treat.

thanks for the tip. Good idea! I'll try them in some apple juice as he isn't keen on citrus fruits.

Hi I get it from scarletts its this one AS 310 http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/as310-soaking-seed-mix-5kg

And you can get a cheap sprouting jar from amazon for around 6 which makes sprouting the seeds really simple and hassle free.

Sprouting is really good for your bird too :)

Dont worry about it. These are normal things in parrot life. Your parrot will be all okay in few days and dont take it seriously. No need to visit doctor for this problem at all.
