Gut Instinct!

There have been a few birds that have been illl lately, I don't know whether it's the weather, time of year, hormones or what it is but I would just like to say this, you can't mess around with a parrot, get it to the vets!!!

When a bird is ill, it masks the illness until it is almost too late.....that is when we usually pick up on things being "just not right".  If you get to know your bird, you know it's behaviour, the way it sits, stands, looks etc and you know when things are a little out of the ordinary.  It's when you notice this little something that he doesn't normally do, or just doesn't look right that you need to be packing that bird in a carrier and off to an Avian vet.  You are not qualified, you cannot cure your bird, you are it's carer and in that respect you should ... care!  If you get your bird to the vets in time then usually a course of antibiotics will sort it out, or at least the vet will be able to advise you of what to do.  If you wait and see what he's like tomorrow...you are prolonging the illness, it isn't going to cure itself and it will have taken a stronger hold on your poor bird.  24 hours in a birds immune system and metabolism is very, very fast.   If it's a question of money and paying the vet, insurance is the way to go, I pay around 80 a year for my two, thankfully I haven't had to use it but no doubt as they get older it will come in very handy.

We say we treat our birds like our children, well we can to a certain extent.  If you have a little child and he's not feeling well, then you can ask them where it hurts and if they are babies, then you can have an educated guess at what is wrong, because you have come to "know" your child.  With an ill bird, you should be able to know that something is wrong, not WHAT is wrong, therefore take it to the only person that can help you an AVIAN vet.

As much as we all have quite a bit of knowledge on here, we are not vets we can only tell you the experiences that we have had, so please, please, please, by all  means come on here and tell us that you think there is something wrong with the bird, but before you do that......get a vets appointment for the same day!  I really can't emphasize that enough, MINUTES lost in seeking help could well be HOURS lost in your little ones life.

A lot of us used a company called 'golden valley' which was fantastic AND cheap but then the lady who ran it retired. It was taken over by exotics direct and we all worried as they are more expensive, but on renewal the prices were ok. When my 2nd birds renewal came through the correspondence was back as golden valley - she must have come out if retirement ????

Good topic pat!!! These poor birds end up going to vets later rather than sooner when its too late, im sure most of the cases could of been cured its such a shame:(((

Hi,
Thank you for the information, I have an african Grey parrot, you have prompted me to get insurance for her, i followed the link for golden valley and this redirected me to www.exoticdirect.co.uk for 5000.00 cover a year it is only 224.81 and for 2500.00 cover a year for only 196.34, I went for the higher one as I would pay anything to keep my bird healthy and well. This is well worth it as last year my parrot was unwell and it cost me 280.00 to be seen by an avian vet and an injection of antibiotics. Thank you for the advice.
