I think he's underweight
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:14:20 AM »

Hey all,

I've just inherited an african grey called Jack. He is a plucker, has been for years (but im hoping with a new home and new diet we can get this sorted). He is completely bald down the middle of his chest which means his keel bone is clear to see. His is quite prominent which is what im worried about.
I am looking for an avian vet so he can be checked over but if he is underweight what would you recommend to fatten him up a bit?
We are struglling to get him to eat any fruit or veg apart from peach and at the moment he is on a seed mix diet.

The best thing to do is weigh him

Just a normal pair of flat kitchen scales will do. A Grey's weight can vary from 350g to 650g, so it all depends on his build and size. The keel bone is prominent anyway but he may not necessarily be underweight

Hiya Rachel,

Yes as soo said if you weigh jack you will know if he is underweight or not, my plucker poppy weighs 485g, her keel bone is also sometimes visible but she's a good healthy weight so try not to worry about jacks keel bone being prominent if he's at a good weight x

Hi where abouts u from? Maybe someone could suggest an avian vet near you.

one of my greys is only 400g but vet said she's lean with lots of muscle and not underweight, her keel bone feels quite prominent but she never stops eating I guess some are just smaller x
