Injured neck
« on: October 16, 2015, 09:12:06 PM »

Hello everyone,

I have a 5 month old african grey. I've had it for about two a month now. About a week ago I've noticed its head was tilted sideways and that there's a slight lump on its neck. I took it to a vet to have it checked and was told it's an infection and that I should give it antibiotics. I wasn't really satisfied with that diagnosis, so I took it to another vet. The second one took an x-ray of its neck and showed me that two disks have been fused together (caused by an injury of some sort, it probably fell in the cage as I haven't seen it fall or anything like that).

Anyways, the vet said that this injury isn't life threatening but that it won't improve. (I've attached a scan of the x-rays)

Does anyone know if it's true or not? Did anything similar happen to anyone's bird before?

I'm really devastated by what I've heard. I have three other parrots for almost 5 years and I've taken really good care of them.

Sorry for the long post guys.

Honestly you're on a forum asking for a vet answer. Only true answer is a vet you trust. Definitely need to have a relationship with your vet.

I can't see a reason to doubt it. I guess you do what's your doubt is it the diagnosis or cause?

They are definitely clumsy sods as babies.

Where are you perhaps you can get some recommendations for vets. Near me I'd recommend mine straight away.

Thank you FeatherMonkey for the reply.

I'm in the middle east (not too many good vets around, most of them specialise in dogs and cats).

My doubt was of the diagnosis. The first vet's diagnosis was of an infection, the second vet took an x-ray and found out about the disks in its neck which seems more reasonable than just saying "an infection" and calling it a day.

Infection could be ruled out with blood work. I believe certain markers confirm if it is, but could be related. Then fusing in what you think is a week(not playing armchair vet, but still seems quick). I can appreciate why a 3rd vet is tempting.

Take it the falconry guys aren't much help? Some countries these might be better help, they'll use vets. If not only suggestion would be to try to get a vet involved by email, might work.

Think anyone trying to play armchair vets here can't really answer and shouldn't.

Thanks again for your advice,

Is it possible if you could contact your vet and inform/show them this thread? If that's too much to ask, is it possible if I could get his/her email to contact them myself? I hope I'm not causing you any inconveniences by this.

Thanks again for looking into this and giving me genuine advice.

My vet, if I remember rightly he did some in the middle east http://avianveterinaryservices.co.uk/

Fingers crossed for you might be a question of spread your chances to get one to help.

Think aav site has some international Association of Avian Veterinarians http://aav.site-ym.com/
