« on: November 07, 2015, 10:55:36 AM »

Hi everyone. Ive not had my african gray that long and shes been a real character and a joy to own. However the last cupple of days shes got quiet and her poops are like water. However shes still eating and drinking well and she wants to get out of her cage and play with me and the kids. Im a little confused if shes ill or not? Shes on the top of her cage now eating her food happy as can be but just not whistleing or talking like she normally does? Also shes not puffing her feathers out or anything? My wife recons coz im ill at the moment with gastroenteritus that the bird is coming out in sympathy for me!! Any help or advice please. Thank you. J

Thank you for your reply. Her poops were green and solid and what i would consider normal when we first got her. But since we got her she loves to have some water with a small spot of sugar free dilute dropped in and shes been eating alot of pomigranites latley but still eating her sunflower seeds out of her seed dish. I dont know if shes just really tired???

Dilute juice? like robinsons? if so, think thats a no no

I meant fresh fruit juice.

Alot of fruit on regular basis will make most birds poop go watery.

dont think it would do her serious harm Jamie, so dont worry too much, just cut it out from now.

you read about people letting their birds drink tea, again, a no no, but wont do serious harm as long not everyday and not for most of their lives.

drinking wise, birds should mostly have plain water, can have sips of your fresh juice  (apple/orange) but try and ensure is pure fresh fruit juice.

other than that think certain manufacturers make herbal style teas for birds like....if i recall correctly anamalzone vita tea...

only human style food i let Georgie have is veg, fruit and nuts. grains and pasta but you need to be careful which grains and so on, check out the forum diet section, it will point you in the right direction

It will be the juice & the fruit, don't give her any fruit for a few days (it should only be a couple of times a week anyway, too much sugar) plain water and that should clear it up, if not get her checked by an avian vet, i'm sure its just the juice and fruit that has caused it though.

Have you researched what they can & can't eat? They have specific needs, have a look around the site and ask  lots of questions :)

Jamie, is she drinking lots of water? I'd be concerned if she is, and does she only eat sunflowers and fruit, no veggies or cooked rice, pasta or potatoes?

Hi there everyone. Just a quick update on my gray tikki. Shes mad a mass recovery and back to her normal self! Shes been drinking a bit but not as much to cause me concern. She is just tucking into a sunday dinner mash potato carrots broccoli sprouts all boiled with no salt! Haha. So i dont know if she was just feeling a little off for the cupple of days or weather she was just tired? Or could it have been the dilute juice i gave her? Her poops are back to normal aswell now! Thank you everyone for all your replys and advice. Ill see how she goes in the next few days on. Thanks again. J
