Jasper has eggs!
« on: July 06, 2016, 02:14:42 PM »

On Friday I noticed jasper started acting odd, and had put on 25grms in weight in less than a week which I knew wasn't right, and I noticed a slight bulge on her little tummy. Come Saturday after tea she wanted nothing more than to sit in her cupboard, so I left her until bed time, went to get her and there it was! a perfect tiny little egg from my girlie, I felt quite proud and I think it's just about sunk in now  :panic:

Last night just before bed there appeared another, so ive left them there incase there are more. Jasper has been eating and drinking as normal since, but she insists on keeping watch over her little babies, bless her  :rose:

Yep Kaz is right Jules don't take em off her or if the hormones are raging she will lay more.
Is she sitting them Jules ?or is she doing what Mandi Co Co did ignoring them.?
Has your well aware Jules at this house were somewhat experts regarding eggs !!!!!!

Hi Julie
I have coco who lays eggs
But I know how much it takes it out of them to produce them so I now avoid all nesting opertunity,
I don't allow dark corners
For her to be able to sit in shredded paper (her grill is deep)
No tickles below head etc
I have to agree with the others
Leave them if she's interested
My coco isn't so I just removed them x

Oh Kaz, glad you sorted your little girl :)

Jasper's not sitting them, and has stopped staring into the cupboard, though I'm sure she knows they are still there. It's not a big cupboard and only a little dark. I think it would be hard to keep her out as I think she would soon find another place, maybe where I can't keep an eye on her, or reach any eggs ifnshe laid them elsewhere x

I've left them where they are, I did try the first one in her cage on Sunday but she wouldn't go in to eat her dinner, and Xavier started playing with it, so I put it back x

Mandi how long do you leave cocos eggs for?

Dave I meant to ask if ever Tims eggs have been fertile, or do you take them away soon and replace them with dummy ones?

I'm sure there's no chance of my two having mated as they've never got that close, I just wondered with yours as they share a cage, and have been together a long time :)

No Jules never been fertile and she's never done what Jasper's done ,
Laid em and then not bothered with em .
Tim tends to work a system .
She goes quiet then starts to pluck her chest and wings
At the same time she's putting toys on her back
At the same time they will start ripping anything up they can .
We've tried with just the grill in without paper and then she starts to mutilate herself and we finish up at the vets.
No one wants to encourage laying but believe me Jules if there that hormonal they will just lay em on the grill.
Soon as Tim lays one ,I take it away and replace it with two pot racing pigeon eggs
Then when she lays another I just replace it, that way she thinks she's lai
d three and this normally stops a third egg coming.
We always leave the eggs with her till about 35 days weaning em off one by one .

Jules coco wanted nothing to do with the eggs so I just removed
I find prevention is better than cure  and I now I just don't allow any nesting behaviours X

Thanks for the advice ,all of you. Jasper can get herself into the cupboard via the drawer, which she chewed a hole in the back of and just climbs down lol, so it would mean putting a lock on, but I don't want her to start on another drawer or find another place. It's been her own space for years, and right or wrong I don't like to take that away, and she might just end up laying on the cage bottom or floor or anywhere! I know Alisons little birds have layed on the aviary floor, as they have no nest boxes, so Dave's right when he says if they want to lay they will lay anywhere, they can't help it x

Not had any more since Tuesday, shall I leave them longer then? Does it mean they're fertile if there's a dark circle or spot at one end?

Oh bless, too old our Xavier lol, he is 15 in two weeks time. I'm sure hes not gay Dave!

Not seen any carryings on, unless the time when I'm in the shower, but when I've watched them both in the kitchen, jasper never lets him get close, they haven't beaked or anything since those first few weeks when xavier came x

You can candle the eggs after a few days and may see red veins
The dark at one end is the air sac z

I held one up to the light a few days ago, there might have been very feint red veins, and a dark spot. So it's the air sac, I did wonder :)

It's been ten days since the first egg, and no more, do you reckon that's it now?

Jules I'm so glad I'm not the only worried egg Grandma!  Zulu laid one a couple of days back and this morning we got up to find another.  She's put them in a clutch and is laying on them both.  We don't have a grill in her cage as she loves to scratch around in her sand and grit so she's just got them on her sand.  She's been eating all the white bits in the grit too so there must be calcium in there that she needs.
Yes I've noticed the additional bathroom needs!!  And she's eating a fair bit too, but very varied.
Thanks so much to the people on here, one more relaxed Grey lover here! :grey: :egg :ty

Morning :)
When this episode is over
You can maybe help prevent it by putting back the grill and not allowing her the nesting behaviour (scratching in loose substance which I will also say is bad for their respiratory system) news paper is better
Avoid strokin down back if you do that
Give 12-13 hours total darkness every evening
Prevention is best as it takes out so much on their body's and calcium reserves
You can give calcium supplements unless she is on a pellet based diet and then it's not needed
Xxx

Thank you Mandi.  Zulu has got worse.  She laid another last night so is sitting on 3 eggs now and has started pulling feathers.  I'm giving her scrambled eggs for breakfast with a little shell in there.  Should I put the grill back in now then?  And use paper instead of sand?  Do I put the three eggs in there on top of the grill?  She's on the proper parrot food from a supplier with pellets, dried fruit and seeds (not sunflower) and I just put a couple of sunflower seeds and nuts on top every couple of days.  She has fresh veg and fruit too.

Don't worry about her with the plucking it's hormonal plucking and when the hormones have died down she will grow the feathers back.S he's laid em now so to me if you try to interfere with her or take em off her she will just lay another three!!.You may also find that she may become cage aggressive and lose weight when she starts to sit tighter just leave her to it.w eve had this situation many times over many years.

She may just desert them as time goes on or you may have to gradually wean em off her which in that case your looking in about a month or so to start the process .

Sorry I missed the replies. How is Zulu and her eggs now?

Jasper didn't bat an eyelid when I removed hers, i showed them to her in my hand and she wasn't bothered at all, sadly they are long gone but I'm relieved we are back to normal
