Tail Feather Problems
« on: May 27, 2016, 08:09:47 PM »

Dorris is almost 3 years old, we've had her since she was a baby. Just after Christmas she had a fall and ended up with an infection, a collar on to stop her picking it and she'd plucked quite a few feathers including some of her red ones. The infections healed nicely but we're having serious problems with her tail feathers, as they're growing through she's picking at them and they're bleeding, there's one especially that she picks and then eventually pulls out for it to then return and the cycle starts again. I'm at the end of my tether with it and I just do not know what to do, she's not in any pain and the bleeding stops as soon as it starts. Can anyone help please?

Hi and welcome from me
Is it the feathers she is chewing or the skin around it
I'm also the mummy to a collar wearing, feather chewing grey
Mine has done this from a baby and is now 7 yrs old
A few pics may help us get a better 'picture' so to speak
Has the vet said anything about this behaviour ?
What is her routine and diet like?
Any uv lighting ? X

Whatever your doing today, do it with a smile and remember, there are thousands of people who would want to be in your shoes

i smile cause you have all finally driven me insane!

Welcome to the forum
When she fell do you know if she fell tail down.?
If she did I think I once read that if this happens it can push the tail follicle s into the birds body . Please tell us more about your birds routine.
