Worried Sick
« on: August 12, 2014, 06:35:25 PM »

Hi everyone.  We have had Buzz for 3 years now and he has come on great, has a brilliant vocabulary however approx 5 days ago we noticed he had stopped talking and yesterday morning he took what I can only describe as a fit and fell to the bottom of the cage.  We took him to an Avian vet who has discovered he has a Blood Calcium deficiency and a small heart murmur.  The vet has kept him in and is looking after him well with updates twice a day.  However he has said the dreaded words that Buzz (who we were told was a boy when we bought him is actually a girl) is a very sick bird and not out the woods yet, they will be keeping him in until the weekend at least.  We have been feeding him on Johnson & Jeff Parrot mix which the vet wasnt impressed with. He did say the main thing is to get him better and then we can concentrate on a new diet for him.  We feel so guilty and are worried sick we are going to lose him.  Any advice/comments would be much appreciated.  :ty

Well she's in the best place for her medicine, try not to feel guilty, it's so hard with their diet, which is why it's great that these places exist. I have a cockatiel with fatty liver disease because of his seed diet, I didn't know any better :(
Just keep positive & like the vet said, hopefully she'll be fine, then you can tackle her diet.

Let us know how she's getting on

Hi as Kaz said you've got to keep positive and he is in the best place.  If it's any consultation when my Bobs was sick the vet said he wished it was calcium deficiency cause that was the easiest thing to fix.  Keep us all updated and love to Buzz. Cx

Thanks.  I have to phone tomorrow afternoon. So will keep you posted.  The house is so quiet and the empty cage/perch is horrible. :-(

Fingers crossed, do you have an avian lamp for her? If not you need to get one, Scarlett has one for 35 at the minute and it's brilliant :)

Hi Everyone.  I phoned the vet today for an update and Buzz is a little better but not out the woods yet.  She is still not eating so is being tube fed, they have upped her calcium and was sitting on her perch today, but then later on was at the bottom of the cage not happy.  The vet has been really good at keeping us informed, but I cant help thinking that if maybe she seen us for a wee while she might perk up as she is used to spending 24/7 with my Hubby.  Fingers crossed she is a bit better tomorrow.

Can I ask what food you feed your parrots on.

Ill post another update tomorrow  :ty

Ah well at least there's an improvement, most of us feed them pellets & veg with the odd bit of fruit, they all like different pellets so I couldn't really tell you which one is best, wait until you discuss diet with your vet as they will be able to tell you how to convert for buzz in the safest way with him being ill at the moment, some good news though

Owww poor Buzz and poor you, I know how heartbreaking it is when they have to go to the vet for something serious.
Mine has Kaytee Exact Rainbow pellets veggies and a small amount of seed mix when he goes to bed.

I hope Buzz will be back with you soon xx

Hi Everyone, Still extremely cut up about buzz.  Feels like a member of the family has gone.  The only concilation is our Amazon is keeping us going, we took her to the vets tonight for a full MOT and she has the all clear, fit & healthy.  Shes not liking the UV light but im sure she will get used to it.  Thank you for all your kind messages im sure it will get easier. xx :ty
