Ants!
« on: May 02, 2014, 08:47:16 AM »

I think ant infestation is a southerly thing, I know when I lived in Leeds and Newcastle I never encountered an ant.

Anyway, Northampton is ant heaven it seems. I noticed in the aviary where my 3 tiels are, that there are ants crawling around.

Is there a natural way to deter them from going in there without risking harm to the tiels? Will the ants affect them at all?

I hate ants around, as fascinating as they are to watch!

Hiya
I always deal with them with a kettle of boiling water down the hole that they all come out of.  We can't use anything else either cause of all of the dogs, cats, etc.  I know its not very nice but they get into everything!!!

The problem is there isn't one place they live, they are all over the gardens round here, any patch of land. I can use ant spray at certain places but they actually get in the aviary every where, no main source

Kaz swill your pavers /patio/drive/drain inspection covers   with cheap bleach eg Aldis /Lidel /Nettos  Good strong mix with a bucket of  hot water :cheekywink: .We do this all the time :secret: It also kills any weeds coming through the cracks too   Just leave your shoes outside when you've finished or you can mark your carpets :panic:  .We always get ants  every year :baseballbat: but we buy ant powder too  & we  put it in every  air brick  round the house too that seems to keep em out   :cheekywink:

I sometimes get ants in the aviary they come for the food that's been dropped particularly any fruit. I put bleach down and they clear off for a while but they do come back. They're a nuisance! and on the front drive we get tons of flying ants, urgh I don't like em!

hi kaz, we have the same problem but ants get inside the flat. i've tried most natural deterrents, like cayenne pepper (its supposed to irritate their feet) but the little devils just walked up the doors and around the other side of the kitchen. same with talcum powder  :nono:

this time last year i resorted to ant powder, and it kept them at bay all through the summer too. now they're back again but not so many - yet! so i might have to use it again. the down side is though that it kills spiders, which i don't like to do x

i use it late at night when jasper isn't around and just sprinkle it without making the bottle puff out, so less risk of breathing it in x
