Avian UV lamps and bird 'trance'
« on: October 10, 2013, 02:46:41 PM »

This is a bit of a strange one and probably more specific to my bird. I have my Arcadia lamp over my CAG's cage. My kakariki is besotted by it and tries to climb inside the lamp cover.

the other day i'd taken Yvie in the shower and when i came down my kakariki was rooted to the spot below the lamp. Literally motionless, i pushed her and prodded her etc. If Yvie had got to her she would have been dead. I had to prize her from the cage and then hold her, it was like she was in a coma, it took about 40 minutes before she was normal again.

Anyone ever experienced anything like this? I daren't put the lamp on now for fear of it happening again.

When I first had mine the birds were besotted with it, but after a while it settled down.

Not heard of any trance like states until now though?

Charlie loved his lamp - UNTIL that is, he chewed half the flamin cover, and then what did he do?!  He bit through the bulb!!  I didnt realise whilst he was out of the cage that he had been playing with the lamp, and must have pulled it closer to the cage

hence, I havent got a lamp at the moment..but theyre only 69 at Scarletts at the moment for the lamp and bulb - bargain!

I believe it's a kakariki trait fro what i've read so it's not really to do with the lamps I feel

Yeah I can't remember where I read it Lynn but I definitely read it.

Found the bit I read

'Some kakariki owners have also reported seizures and/or strange trances with their pets, a behavior that seems to be normal in this species'

Kazky,

We have just had the same experience. We brought home a UV lamp for Reyna and she has been playing under it(on and off) for the most part of the day.

We turned the lamp off and soon after she just froze. There was almost nothing we could do to get her out of this trance. After around 5 minutes she snapped out of it but then was very slow in her movements. She seems to be getting better but still doesn't seem 100%. We caught it on camera so if anyone is interested in seeing it let me know.

Have you witnessed this since? Are you still using the UV lamp?

Brandon is she a kakriki? It didn't happen to her again but unfortunately my baby died at the beginning of the year, I don't know if she had a heart attack, it was very sudden, i'm still heartbroken, I hope all is well with your girl
