Hi guys, long time since I've been active... apologies... hope you are all well!

My Dolly (now 7 years old) has had a bit of a crash!

She flew as normal to her stand in the living room after I opened her cage for a fly.

Something spooked her mid flight and she went to turn back but caught her right wing in the perch, then seemed to land rather poorly, bless her...

She landed on a cushion, so that softened the fall.

Then she flew (or attempted to) back up to her cage but couldn't make it and went back to the floor.

She's now on her main cage and preening nicely. Had some food and seems completely herself, but upon closer inspection, she has lost about 5 of the black outer feathers ( I think these are the flight feathers) from her right wing.

There's no bleeding, but it's clear that her flight will now be uneven or ultimately non achievable as she is.

I wanted to ask, what do I do/not do in this situation? I can't risk her being out and attempting flight again, as I am sure she will ultimately injure herself, but equally I worry about having her stay in the cage for potentially months on end until the feathers have grown back?

I've saved the feathers in case anyone wants to see them, then can advise if they are indeed vital for her flight.

Sorry for such a long winded message but I love to have her out and flying freely, but I worry if she is in the cage for months from now on, she may lose strength or confidence to fly again once the feathers are back.

Thanks in advance.

When you say she caught her wing, did you check to see if she damaged her wing at all? It might be worth getting a vet to check it.

I found when mine lost her flight feathers after a night fright that she seemed to know she couldn’t fly & just stayed on her java tree. Hopefully Dolly might do the same.
