Flying accidents
« on: November 28, 2012, 12:36:10 PM »

Can anyone help? My young African Grey loves to come out of his cage, in fact he is always saying 'Want to come out, want to come out'. He is fine sitting on top of his cage and around the room but gets into trouble when he flies. It is a fairly large room and he flies two of three times around before getting to the tricky bit...landing. Recently he has crashed into the walls and I'm really worried that he will harm himself, he falls to the floor with a thud. The last time this happened he seemed a little stunned afterwards but quickly recovered. He loves coming out but I don't want to take the risk of him killing himself. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hi Wendy, how old is the grey?
Baby's I know can be a little clumsy
Do you have other safe places he can land other than the cage?
He may be searchin for somewhere he sees as safe
Does he have a play stand? X

Hi Mandi,

He is about three years old and we've had him since he was 12 weeks. I think the breeder had clipped his wings because he didn't even attempt to fly until quite recently. He can now fly but his sense of direction is terrible and he crashes into things. On a good day he'll fly three times round the room and land back on his cage. On a bad day it is one flight to the opposite wall, slam and fall to the floor. When I go to pick him up he always says 'Alright Peter, alright'. I'm getting anxious about letting him out because I'd hate him to get seriously hurt. We haven't got a stand but there are other places where he can land. Maybe a stand would help. Thanks

Please don't confine him to his cage
He will soon learn how to negotiate flying around the room
But maybe a stand on the opposite side of the room would help
He probably needs to build up his strength n stamina if he is only just learning to fly at age 3
I had a baby from 18 wks who was also clipped, she is also 3 and slowly becoming a great flyer
She ain't great at landing but I have a lot  of hanging toys and stands , so this makes it much easier

Hiya Jendie, my Pickle is the same. Clipped wings when we got her 18 months ago. She's 5 years old. At first, as her feathers started to grow, she flew ok but crashed into everything. She had grazes on her face and I was worried she would really hurt herself. Eventually, as she's got more familiar with safe landing places and she's learning to control her flight, her confidence has really improved. She now seems to fly because she wants to; not just because something has startled her!

The worst place for Pickle to crash into was windows. We put up some sheer curtains so if she flew into them, she wouldn't smash into the glass. Now she go near the glass anymore. You'll be well chuffed the first time she flies over and lands on you :D

My Lola was the same, but she got used to the room when she couldn't fly, now I think she is so used to the room she knows where to land. She has had a outperform of crashes but nothing serious. . I think the more they try it the better that get. .xx

Hi Ollie, you will get better at landing and become a pro :pecking:
Tell mum and dad unless you seem like you have really hurt yourself on your land for hem to give you a short while to compose yourself as you may associate the bump with whoever fetches you
Yes birds are as crazy as humans sometimes and we wouldn't want you resenting your parronts would we :nono:
Happy flying x x

Hi Ollie, Im Ozzy and Im only 15 weeks old but I have the same problem as you, I cant fly all round the room yet, but I fly across it and straight into the wall and drop down. can you tell me how you manage to change direction?  Mummy says I will one day be a great flyer as I have lovely big wings, I think she's made cause my new home is definitely too small for me.
I have to go... quick mummy is coming back and she'll go mad if she catches me on here, I'll have to pretend to be eating the keys kkasdfieo490q43jkasmckopfgadf
