if that is what the vet said then he must be right, I wouldn't want to test his theory anyway!  :panic: I am not even sure what you can do to scare wasps away, but definitely avoid putting any fresh foods, especially fruit in the cage outside, wasps love that sort of stuff! :panic:

i brought Gary in on Saturday because of the wasps - i had taken the fruit out because i knew they would make a bee line for it (do you see what i've done there???)
but they still wouldnt go away - i think they could still smell/taste it on the bars where he'd splashed the juice !!

I remember a while back some one on here said their parrot was killed by a wasp sting
so it is a worry. I think mostly bees and wasps have no interest in birds and will just go
about their own business, but I suppose if an inquisitive Parrot were to go for the wasp then it could react.
Probably all you can do is be vigilant and as Irina says no fruit etc in the cage.

i lost a very large koi carp because it tried to eat a bee that landed on the water so i would think a grey would not have much of a chance if it got stung

Hi

I have 2 birds in my aviary this is the 2nd summer. Firstly i have a really bad wasp phobia and wouldnt go near the aviary for 2 months , my lovely husband and my mum had to care for them ! However i have this year found that they will go back to their nests at night so thats when i can go into them after 9pm. I avoid fresh fruit but it bothers me that they arnt getting the correct diet. Also parrot mix has dried fruit , how difficult would it be to change to pellets ?

Reading about what the vet had said about a wasp sting killing a grey or my smaller bird has concerned me . I dont think they have ever been stung at least havent shown signs of it.

Sometimes there are up to 10 wasps around and inside the aviary usually in the bowls gorging on the dried fruit.

I dread july - semptember and glad when they have died off.

What about fly netting?

I don't know whether it could be ordered to fit an aviary, but I would have thought that people do buy it to protect their birds.

Would it need to be fitted so that the birds cant reach to chew it ? Where would you but that ?

I know that fly covers for rabbit hutches, are placed on the outside, so I would think it would be the same for an aviary.

Try searching the internet, or even emailing aviary companies to find out if they can supply netting.

We don t have a wasp nest , not at least on our property. There must be one fairly close though.

That looks like the type of mesh we could use, i am going to look into this further and see how to attach it onto the aviary.

The wasps dont seem to bother my birds however if it proves fatal it would be awful.

Thankyou.
