Yay a UV light
« on: September 11, 2014, 04:05:39 PM »

Last week I bought a UV light on a stand for Jack
Today I've noticed him rubbing his head on the toy that's hanging from his cage. Ive never noticed him doing this before. I was wondering if the UV lights can irritate their skin at first and if they can, is there anything I can do to help?
He gets sprayed a couple of times a week with aloe vera and water mix

Uv is needed so I can't see how it would irritate him
Just make sure it's shining from
Above and not at a angle or it can slowly damage his eyes x

Yeh it's directly above him. I wasn't sure because I haven't had him long and he's 22 this year and as far as im aware hes never had any uv from a lamp or the sun
Maybe he's just doing one of those strange AG things

Aww bless him, how is jack? If he's never had the UV lamp before, maybe it makes him feel more alert or awake if you get my meaning. As it is supposed to enhance colours for them as well as provide a natural form of light :)

He's ok although he is plucking ALOT at the moment. He's always been a plucker but it's got extreme since we got the light  :baseballbat: Maybe that's just a coincidence though

It could have brought on a molt rachel, could be why he's plucking a bit through irritation, possibly?

I know when I first bought one for jasper her molting pattern changed and seemed to slow down, as she used to molt for ages, have a few weeks break then start again. I mentioned this to her old vet and he said a lamp can help regulate molts :)

Yeh could be although he's definatly pulling them out. Sometimes he will just sit there and pull one feather after another out. It's so horrible to watch. I'm surprised he's got any left the rate he's going at the moment.
I think maybe i should spray him more often but he hates it so much. I hate not knowing what to do for the best  :violin

Rachel , when you say he hates a shower
What's his response ?
Mine dart round cage but as you say has to be done
They do prefer to sit in the bath bottom and have a human shower x

Hmmm maybe something to try although we've only had jack 6 months and he's had a tough life locked in a cage so he's still very wary of new experiences  :panic:
As soon as Jack sees the spray bottle all his feathers puff up and he starts bobbing his head then he starts trying to attack the bottle through the bars  :baseballbat: Ive tried it while he's been on the perch above his cage but he tried so hard to attack it he fell off (Jack can't fly) Ive tried warm water, cold water different bottles but it's always the same reaction. Anyone that it saw it for the first time im sure would think I beat him with the bottle!
Then after he's been sprayed he will go and 'hide' on his top perch and sulk  :ignore:

Poor jack some birds do take ages to like new or strange things. If he has a shower perch its worth a try, let him sit on it without the water near him, and/or let him watch you have a shower. Then try a little bit of spray to see if he like that :)
