aww lovely, a few people here have aviaries from Avifab, they are very good apparently. As long as your garden is secure they can stay in there all day.

awr thanks everyone, I'll check them out, I know I need to have the ground flat before I get one (the garden goes upwards at the back) and people can see in when they're passing the front of my house so I'd like fences first too.

I've read things about needing to go 3 ft down to prevent foxes etc digging underneath??! and needing double mesh because of jackdoors being able to get in and attack. I'd love it done asap for this summer but I've only got a grand saved up and it all seems so complex, I'm not sure where to start! I'll check this place out now though, thanks :)

(I've just realized that I'm supposed to post pictures of myself!) ....... maybe...... in time! ha

Lol Kaz!!! :)
If you just plan on using it for nice days when your at home to supervise I doubt you would need to dig down etc. My aviary is on flags, we bought the materials and made it ourselves but that may not be an option for you. What sort of size are you thinking of? You may have enough saved already would be worth getting a quote at least.

haha :)

I'm looking at one around 10ft by 9 ft but the garden is weird & not sure if they can make the whole garden flat as it's got stone part way up. Yeh maybe I have enough already I get onto it in the morning. I'm loving these photo's of aviaries and loads of birds :) I'm in birdy heaven :) wish I could have all that for my baby. One day soon xx

If I'm right they can be made to your requirements, and some are sold per panel?

Would be best to contact Lockey, who makes them x

Hi guys,

Mandi I love your aviary it look ace, I'd love one like that but I'm reading contradictory things online, like aluminium is not suitable, galvanized is toxic, wood will be chewed, Mesh will be chewed, and most importantly I read somewhere that a jackdaw ripped off a parrots leg because there was only one panel of mesh or whatever it was. Do I need to double up on the panels (in other words buy two aviaries) I don't want this happening to my girl. She was out in her carry cage a few weeks ago and I saw a jackdaw land on it with her inside, luckily I was watching her like a hawk and I shot out arms in the air.

I think the lady/man at avifav said that it'll be an extra 600 for double, I don't want her little legs getting bitten off, has this ever happened to anyone? there's loads of seagulls around here too, oh & next door has 6 cats...

My aviary is emptied of all ropes etc over winter
I use garden screening for the roof
This also provides shade as well as safety from other birds
2 sides are near fence /garage wall
So I guess if that's the case for you then you could also screen the side too leaving just the front open
Iv never had problems with birds Landin on mine , I guess the Jackdoor story is rare x

It's like twigs on a huge sheet
You buy it from garden centres etc
My aviary is 6x9 and one piece covered the whole roof :)

Hi everyone,

Just an update on my outside avairy. I'm very excited and so is peanut :) that the builders are coming tomorrow to start the ground work. They are putting 38mm concrete slabs down & making it level. Is there anything I should know before they start? How does it work where some space is left to plant trees or greenery, what do I tell them to do.

Thanks

Are you planning to have greenery inside the aviary?

Hi Lyn,

I would like greenery but I'm not sure what type to get? the ground work has been done an the aviary has been ordered :) it arrives next week.

I'm just wondering where to get ropes, feeding dishes from etc, I've looked online but can't find anywhere in the UK, northern parrots don't seem to have thick long rope (unless I have missed something) I have read that for African Greys that 2 inch rope is best, and i will need a 13ft rope! x
