12 fun filled years!
« on: August 05, 2016, 12:30:21 AM »

HI

My name is Lisa and I share my life with my boy african grey congo "Krakr" and his girlfriend "Princess"...Krakr is 12 years old, and Princess is now 10.  I got them both as baby's and boy have they taught me a lot in 12 years of sharing my life with them.

Krakr and Princess are now the proud parents of Tsweets (temporary name).  Hatched on June 31st, now 5 weeks old it's time that I need to remove him/her from mom and dad and begin hand feedings.
BUT
I'm inexperienced at hand feeding as Krakr and Princess were weened when I bought them...yes, I'm chicken!
I realize that it's important that I learn fast, and that if I want Tsweets to be a good companion pet then I need to do this...
I can sure use some support, ergo my locating your site while sifting through the webmaze for information on hand feeding baby grey's.
You might not be surprised to read that I found the internet lacking in good information regarding raising baby grey's.
I hate the internet, just fyi

So...that's me, my family of grey's and our current situation.
I'll leave now, return later when I have more time to peruse your site.

Thank you for letting me join, ~Lisa~

Hi Lisa, i've handreared a couple of cockatiels from 10 days old, it's a very rewarding feeling but time consuming.
Make sure everything is sterile before you feed, I sat everything in boiled water.
Are you going to syringe feed or spoon? If you syringe feed you have to put the syringe into the right side if the beak so the formula goes to the left otherwise they can choke as it goes to their lungs.
I would suggest spoon feed for a grey though. Temperature is vital, if it's too cold they won't eat, too hot will scald the crop. It's around 105 degrees.
You'll need to feed about 3 times a day for a 5 week old.
Kaytee exact has ratios on the pack of correct feeding amounts.
They flap a lot while feeding so gently hold onto the head and tilt the spoon slowly, you'll see the crop fill up,
Stick to the guidelines on amounts because they constantly beg for more.
Weigh before and after feeding too.
It's very nerve wracking at first so as Mandi says if you have an avian vet who's willing to show you that would help.

Hello again,

I'm so sorry it has taken me this long to get back here.
I had a sudden family death and the funeral was just last week.
I still haven't done anything about taking the baby out for feedings, as I became very depressed.
I'm trying hard to pull myself back up ...and I do need to get on this task of hand feeding my baby grey.
New name idea "Griffin"

I found a guy who is willing to help show me the proper way to feed him/her.
I'm glad, but since the whole funeral thing...well, I still haven't called him back to set up a time.

It's hard where I live as I am in a very rural part of Ontario...cattle country, farms all around me, and so the closest vet is an hour drive.
Of course there are closer veterinarians around, but none that handle parrots.

So, soon...very soon...I plan to get this done.
My plan is to pack up the baby in my sewing basket with a towel.
And drive the hour away to meet this man who will hopefully teach me how to care for Griffin properly.

OH My GOD I am freaking out!!!
I admit that I am scared to death of doing this wrong and losing this precious little creature that I just ...well, I just love it and I haven't even held it yet, I'm so scared that Princess will reject it if I do...and then what would happen if I fail at feeding it properly...Ugh!

I would love to show you pictures, but I'm not sure how on your site.
If someone would please tell me how to do it, next time I come to visit I will show you pictures of my grey's.

Thanks everyone, see you all very soon.
~Lisa~

Hi Lisa I'm sorry you've had to go through such a rough time.
Family deaths are a big reality check that lets us know that we aren't immortal.
Most of us on here use Tapatalk to put pics up .
For years we tried to put them up with no success until we downloaded Tapatalk.
Hope this helps.

I'm so sorry to hear your news, it's obviously hit you very hard. If you do go ahead with the handrearing it will give you a focus & take your mind off things.
Let us know how you get on

Hi, just wondering if baby was by accident or were your greys parents before? Can you leave them to rear him as there won't be many more weeks before he starts weaning, he'll still learn to be friendly if you go and spend time with him. Hope it works out whichever you decide :)
