Hello
« on: September 09, 2016, 11:59:30 AM »

Hi. I have been looking at this site for about 5 months and found it absolutely fantastic! So today I have finally got my baby African grey home and I am devastated because putting him in his cage did not go to plan 😩  He flew out the carrier straight into the floor and as I picked him up to put him in the cage he bit me really hard and drew blood ......I know it must be so scary for him as he has been taken from his "home" to a new home. I'm hoping I have not done any permanent damage in him trusting me ....how long do you think now I should leave it till I interact again. The breeder said twenty four hours for him to adjust etc xx

Hi and welcome finally to the site

That's a shame things went like that but try not to be to down hearted about things, I'm sure in time things can be good, and time is the key element here there can be know rushing things sadly the breeder telling you 24hrs isn't true having said that you may have Been lucky and things could have been fine, but generally speaking there is no time limit on these things as you say it's a frightening thing for the birds being moved from one place to another, and the one thing you have gain with your new birdy is trust and more importantly he as to gain your trust, don't leave it long at all with regards interacting with him but interacting doesn't mean always handling you can sit by his cage and talk to him and he will slowly over time realise your not a threat praising loads verbally in a joyful tone and also with treats you should also understand that some birds just don't like being handled but don't worry to much there's along way to go yet but Mandi on here well she is very very experienced with greys etc and she has a couple of greys she can't handle, but I kid you not they get no less thought of as all of Mandi's other birds there are ways & im sure Mandi will be along later to offer more advice to you but like I say don't rush things it will just take time and hopefully things will be ok for you, if you have anymore questions or issues please don't hesitate to ask in the mean time do you have some essentials like toys and and an avian light this is crucial to there well being.

Hope to hear from you soon

Thank you so much for your reassurance. Yes he has toys and an avian light ......I have sat next to him in the cage and spoke to him and he seems a lot calmer. He is on his perch now ......I know it was frightening for him but I was gutted that I made things ten times worse 🙈 Xxx

Ah honestly you didn't make things worse, these things happen, you see you say he's calmer today well that's a good sign it will take time but the wait will be well worth it I promise as for the bite yesterday that I'm sure was just out of fright so try not to be to down they hurt don't they grey bites  :cry2: you'll be fine I'm sure.

Do you have a name for your bird

These things happen to all of us. Please don't worry too much. The main thing is for you now not to be scared of being bitten again.

He will sense that and that will make him jittery and therefore prone to giving you another bite.

Just give him time to get his bearings. it will take as long as it takes and it must be done on his terms and time.

Just take your time, it will be worth it :)

Hi and welcome to you and Mr Darcy
Sorry your early experience didn't go well
But please don't let it put you off or make you nervous
Did you meet your baby befor you bought him home ?
And I take it you have seen him handled by others befor you ?
It may of just been a shock for him and he bit out of fear
And yes I do have 3 greys I can't handle but they still give us many laughs a day :)
2 of mine are stick trained too so I can move them about on a buddy perch (saves my fingers )
Can I ask how old he is too ?
Just take it slowly talk softly to him
Avoid eye contact for now as this is threatening
I'm sure he will soon want to come for cuddles when he feels more at ease :)
If you have young children try and keep them calm around him , greys are known for disliking kids as they move too fast and are too unpredictable
Keep us posted and any questions shout up xx

Hi ......thank you so much for your advice. He is 15 weeks old and I have visited him and handled him every two weeks since he was 3-4 weeks old ☺️  I know I did everything wrong and I'm beating myself up 🙈 ....but to be fair I totally understand why he bit me .....it was sheer fright. Tomorrow is another day and I will be patient with him ....  and be confident knowing I have this forum for support and advice .....thank you once again 💖 Xx

Well touch wood things seem to be going well with Mr Darcy. Listened to your advice ......sat by the cage talking calm and giving him the odd treat. He absolutely loves my daughter and chirps and comes to the cage as soon as she enters the room. He came out of his cage yesterday and let me give him a head scratch. Love him ......he tends to growl at my husband but is taking treats off him so slow and steady is the pace ☺️ Xxx once again  :ty for everyone's advice xx
