Hi, newbie here needs advice
« on: January 11, 2017, 01:18:37 PM »

Hello, I'm hoping someone here can give me a few tips or share words of wisdom with me. I'm re-homing a 5 year old Afican Grey male tomorrow - I've had exotic animals but never kept birds. His owner has been in hospital for weeks and must go into a care home - so the parrot has been neglected and has been plucking at his feathers on his chest, wings and tail. A sign of anxiety and boredom? He will come with his food and cage. Is there anything I can do that will help his transition and make settling in easier? How about tackling his habit of plucking?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

aww glad he's found a home.

Initially you just need to let him settle in, the plucking as you say is likely to be anxiety.

put his cage somewhere quiet, but where he can watch the world around him. Once he's comfortable we can help you out with food, lighting etc. Do you know if he's been handled or if he's tame?

Hi, thank you for your quick response! Yes apparently he's very affectionate and enjoys his head being rubbed. Would you suggest just leaving him alone for a few days or handle him occasionally? He hasn't been out of his cage in a long time apparently :-(

Let him guide you, leave his door open, if he's comfortable he may wander out, but let him decide. Are you confident handling him? Offer your hand or some food and see how he reacts, if he seems scared, leave it till the next day etc.

It's just a slow game, letting him understand you are a friend, they are very sensitive birds and just need to feel safe and secure.

Like Kaz says just leave his door open ,don't force him ,then perhaps a look at his diet .What's he been fed on as he been sprayed regular  , or as he been fed on human food too .Full marks to you taking this bird on and slow and steady is the name of the game.
