Hi
« on: March 12, 2010, 08:01:15 AM »

Hi,

My name is Chris and I live in Manchester.
Our first ever baby grey is coming in 2 weeks and to be honest we are equally as petrified as we are excited.
We have done all the research and read the books but guess there's nothing like the real thing to scare you to death.
I'm sure we will be fine but any advice for the first few days/weeks will be greatly appreciated.
All in all we cant wait to get him home and begin

Look forward to many posts and many new friends on here.

Hi and Welcome to the forum .. Congrads on getting a baby grey. i have a 7 month old and i got him when he was 11 weeks old so i know where ya coming from . you think its scary now wait till ya get them home and they start too fly then the fun begins lol or when they dive bomb in the cage lmao so much too look foward too huh . just make sure ya put a perch close to the bottom so they can perch and you not have to worry about them falling at nite time . and put newspaper at the bottom of ya cage so its lil feet dont go threw the rack at the bottom . you'll get the hang of it .. alot of good people on this site and they can answer about any question on greys . so have a look around and relax its gonna be ok :panic:

Thanks to all for the welcomes.

Immediate concern is mainly food / pellets / seeds etc as there are so many differing opinions on the net. I guess we will find out what he likes the best soon enough.

Is it worth taking him to the avian vet in the first few weeks just for a check up?
He will be 14weeks when we get him apparently, cant wait !!

I took Haydes for a check up within the first 2 weeks of having him, he is then due to go back in the summer for his annual health check

Always a good idea to get them checked out

Hi and  :hiya Chris

From Oscar Poppy and myself

Sure you will find everything (and more) on this site

People from the North West definitely outnumbered on here mate .......
but even the Southerners on here are nice

Be interested to know where you are getting your Grey from as we only live about 20 miles apart?
PM me with information if you want :secret: :secret: ?
Cheers

Us southerners are ok
Chris, the breeder should give you all the info you need to get your little companion settled, and ask them as many questions as you can before you leave, especially diet, what they have been eating, what they love to eat, their habits, favourite toy, etc ect it will give you a good start, they should be fully weaned, but sometimes its a comfort for some babies to still have a little baby formula daily, Kaytee is the best brand to look at
As far as a vets visit is concerned, let him/her settle in  and then have a good look around for a recommended avian vet, and dont forget to ask on here, we have members all over the country that can give you advice as to whether the vet is reputable, there are a few avian vets out there that we have had complaints about, so it always worth checking on here
Stock up on lots of veggies, fruit, we have great topics about it in the diet section, whats safe and whats not, so take a good look around

Hi Chris &  :hiya

I'm also curious to know where you are getting your grey from. Our Danny Boy came from a breeder in Manchester.

i was exactly feelin the same when i first got rocky, the greatest fear i had was would he like me?
the breeder told me to just leave him on the cage for few hours or so to get used to me and the his new surrounding which i did follow then i open the top of his cage and after few minutes he flew to my shoulder while i was sittin on the couch watchin telly... and the feelin of joy i had was overwhelming

Thanks again all for the kind wishes.
For those who wanted to know, I have bought the bird from a recommended place called 'Adlington Pets' which is close to Chorley.
A lot of breeders I contacted put me in touch with them and the staff were lovely and couldnt do enough to help.
Shouldnt be long now, cage arrived today so gonna try to assemble it tomorrow !

Ooo nice to know Jack came from the same place, I trust he is healthy and everything you hoped he'd be? There were cheaper options out there to be honest but I'd rather pay extra to get a healthy, looked after baby from a reputable place.
Just want to get him now and bring him home!!
