My african gray is in need of help.
« on: November 29, 2016, 05:41:46 PM »

Hello, my name is amin and i am in need of help.
My african gray, coco, is itching himself almost every 2 minutes when we get him out of the cage. He pulls out these soft balls of white feather (sorry, dont know what they are called) and it lands on the floor. It makes our living room a complete mess. I am not sure if its normal, but he fills our big living room with those balls. I have to clean everyday. He is almost a year old. Im not sure, he might be 7 months. Is this normal for them? I shower him/her every week with the shower, but i reduce it and make it softer so it wont damage his feathers. I dry him too. (Not too hot so his eyelids are fine) he is friendly with me, he likes it when i scratch his head. His diets compose of sunflower seeds, one pistachio, one grape and pomegranate. (He mostly eats the seeds tho.) Also, since i dont live in the western countrys, its hard to get some products. I contacted a vet and he said its normal, but another vet gave me drops of some medicine and told me to use it once a week.(i can tell you the name but its not with me now)
Also,i have another problem. My friend, who had a parrot of his own, gave me a type of spray, i have no idea what it is but he said this is antibacterial shower or something. Well i used it, and sadly my parrot has recieved yellow spots on his stomach area. We washed him today but it didnt remove it much. Im sad that it will be permenant. I can provide pictures if needed. Thank you for reading.

Hi
First of all , his diet is far from ok
Sunflower seeds are fine as a varied diet but they are pure fat
He needs either a good quality seed mix as well as calcium supplements or a pellet diet
He needs plenty of fresh veg and little fruit too
Showers a few times a week and allow him to dry
Hair dryers will dry his skin out
Do you also give him access to a outdoor space either in a aviary or a travel cage ?
They need vitamin D from the sunshine and they can't get this through a window as glass filters the important bits out
You can buy avian lamps made specially for birds ,though I'm not sure where you live
A video of your grey doin the action will be good for us to see and maybe offer other advice too xx

It sounds like those feathers are just the down he's pulling out, probably from a moult. And yes they are messy, but parrots are mess making :)

As Mandi has said you need to change his diet. Also please don't give any medicines, sprays or anything else unless its from an avian vet for an illness or proven safe for avians. You could easily kill him using sprays or supplements. They are very sensitive.

Okay. I have changed his diet to an african gray mix.
We live in an apartment so i cant take him to the balacony.
Im afraid he will fly. Also, from the mix im giving him, he only eats the small seeds. I will have to post a video but im not sure how. Can you show me how? And will the feather plucking be solved in the future?

No don't take him to the balcony if he's not in a cage. The feather pulling is just preening i'm guessing and it can't be solved, it's how the keep their feathers tidy, it's like us brushing our hair

aww he's gorgeous. He's definitely not a plucker

I would try misting him with a bit of water, just a light spray, the discolouration should go in time. :)

Hopefully i can use some mist. Do you have anything to tell me about ownership of these wonderful birds? Any tips to get to his heart?

There is lots of information on the forum, between us we've gone through most issues so have a look round.

I'll start by saying they tend to own us though :) They are amazing creatures, very clever, is yours starting to talk yet? Not all talk but if they do they speak more if they are constantly being spoken to.

They need lots of toys to keep their minds active and stop boredom. Boredom leads to behavioural problems and sometimes plucking. So make sure he has lots to do and interactive with him lots.

Ask any questions and we'll be able to help.

He whistles and i have magically been able to teach her 'meow' but we have had him for less than a month so i suppose its progress. Also, shes afraid of toys, and a bench i bought for her when he gets back to the cage. Hes afraid of that too. When i put them inside his cage he doesnt go back for food. Also, can you recommend me a diet? He is used to sunflower seeds because of his horrible last owner, so he only eats those when we put fruits and vegetables for him. Planning to start a pellet diet for him. Can you tell me the easiest way to make him some?
