NEWBIES HERE
« on: August 20, 2016, 09:28:44 AM »

Hi everyone, we are Mike and Michelle, and we are newbies to A/G. we bought our first A/G Sheldon, he is 6 years old and we got him on 19/08/2016.. some 12 hours later he is feeding from our hands and also stepping up on to hand, plus talking and going back into cage so i think thats really good for a bird thats only been with us for just over 12 hours, his feed is tropix large parrot pellets.. any advice from people would be good. we will enjoy this site very much

thank you, yes this is a great site and me and my wife love this site..
today we have had Sheldon in and out of the cage but had to be put away as the grandchildren came to visit and we did not want to take any chances as we have only had him for one day now..

this evening i had hi out and doing step up, then back in cage then step up again so in and out of cage a few times, no more then 3 times, the forth time i placed him on top of the cage and went to put my hand out a say step up but he backed away from me, so i tried again, the same thing he backed away from me, so the next time i sat down next to his cage with his door open and said in your cage, and he went in his cage and i rewarded him with a very tiny bit of cheese, i left him like that now, can i ask why he back off from me? the only thing i can think of his, he did not want to step up and go into his cage and was fed up with me doing it 3 times, any advice please

It sounds like you're going a bit too fast, when he backs off leave him alone or you'll risk a bite.

You need to start watching his body language too, what you do over the next few months will map out your relationship too, it can make or break it.
He has only been with you a very short time, if he steps up reward him then leave him alone for the day, he needs to understand you as well & realise you are not scary.

Yes I would go with that, it limits any possible anxiety for him. It may be that he'll happily do it other times but try only if he's giving you signs he wants to.
What we all are guilty of initially is understanding that everything to them  is a potential threat to them and we're so desperate to hold them etc, so to allow them to learn that things are safe is the best thing we can do.
