Advice On Sanctuary For Stevie
« on: August 31, 2011, 05:57:48 PM »

Hey guys,
I'm not sure how many of you will remember my little senegal Stevie. Basially he was given to me by a pet shop owner who couldn't sell him and was going to neck him. He couldn't fly and hes been with me for 6 years now. Hes always been a plucker and was parent reared in an aviary
Anyway hes been pretty much wild all the time i've known him, however he has now managed to stop plucking his wings and only do his chest area...This means he has learnt to fly!!!

Its great! But it also means I now need to find him a aviary and think its best for him to go to a sanctuary with other senegals (of course i'll pay for his upkeep for life - hes my responsibility after all) Hes showing alot of natural behaviours - has hollowed out my beuro and currently spends time in the making a nest and breaking through the different layers like its a tree trunk. He flys as well now which is so amazing and i'm so pleased he can do it at last.

I can not give him what he needs. He needs to be away from people and hopefully he will get on with other senegals. He used to be really aggressive to my other birds and all other animals (he attacked the dog a few times! and won!) but since sharing a room with Gandie he is learning to interact with birds and gets really excited when gandie speaks senegal to him.

Can anyone reccomend or does anyone personally know a really great sanctuary? I'm thinking about the national parrot sanctuary - http://www.parrotzoo.com/the-sanctuary/ but wondered if anyone knew what its like or had any other/better reccomendations?  He needs somewhere where he will be able to hide away if he wants and distroy stuff to his hearts content.

Thanks for any input

Hi there, I remember you tried to rehome him before and I recommended Raystede, but I don't remember why they say no? Was it because he had to be a strong flyer? He is now, maybe it is worth trying them again?
Maybe someone on here with an aviary could offer your little guy a home?

Hi Irina,
Raystede wouldn't take him at the time because they had no room. I know they have taken in birds but they don't want stevie and I can't really get an answer as to why. Especially as i'm going to pay for all his vet checks on arival and care for the rest of his life. It might be he just won't be able to fit in with the rest of their collection.

Originally I wasn't going to home him with other birds and although he is still a sod with my guys he does love the sound of other sengals so i hope perhapse he would get on with them. I would consider homing him to someone here if they had a suitable aviary for him - i would have to do a home check. Evil as he is he is still one of my babies and I have to make sure he goes to the right place.

that is a shame  :cry2:
I spoke to a friend the other day who also works for RSPCA and she mentioned a place where they took a couple of budgies and she said it had massive aviaries and was a wonderful sanctuary, I will try and find out what that place was and let you know.

Thanks I didn't think of that I'll post on there too.

If the RSPCA one is the king of the arab emirates place they use then i've already spoke to them, if its not i'd be intrested in anything that might help
