African Greys In The Wild!
« on: January 29, 2010, 09:07:43 PM »

I dont know if this footage has been on here before but i thought it may interest some/ a few of you, . . . . . (very interesting but also very sad in parts!)

Part 1
Where the Wild Greys Are - Grey Parrot Conservation, Part 1 of 3 Small | Large

Part 2
Where the Wild Greys Are - Grey Parrot Conservation, Part 2 Small | Large

I just want to warn you that this clip isnt so nice, shows them being trapped for people like us to buy them! (obviously most of us have captive bread birds but if there were no pet greys this wouldnt go on! Sobering scenes for all of us Parrot Owners!)

Part 3
Where the Wild Greys Are - Grey Parrot Conservation, Part 3 Small | Large

I have to confess something, we lived in Africa in my early years, from a baby to 10/11 years old, and we had wild caught greys  :cry2: one was called Paddy and i loved him, but he died within months ...I dont remember much, only that they used to go out and catch them and then give them as gifts to the "white folk"....I often ask my mum about it...but she wont say much, just that they all died  :cry2:

Its all about educating people though isnt it Squid, there is no need to feel ashamed about your youth because different cultures have different "ways", all you did is live by those ways!
What needs to be done is to educate people for the future so things like this dont keep happening, think of elephants and Ivory, its now illegal to hunt for Ivory.
Really makes you think watching things like this though doesnt it, certainly got me thinking....

I have a feeling it legal to catch them in certain parts of africa, but its illegal to import them I believe, depending on the country...in the uk we insist on documentation, vet check ups, paperwork, proof of birth etc etc, which is why they are shipped in such a poor state, usually by road to try an evade the authorities....this is where I think our ok breeders do a good job, the demand has decreased and birds are available here, so there is little demand from abroad ....

Which is exactly why I posted it.

We all need to know the harsh truth of what humans can cause for amusement.

I just think its grounding and should inspire every one of us to do the absolute best for our feathered friends.  :grey:
