has anyone been to the parrot zoo since it reopened?
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:08:46 PM »

Hi,
Just wondered if anyones been to the parrot zoo since it re opened?
They phoned the other day and said they can take stevie in and had been doing work but wanted to know if anyone had seen it yet?

I'm still not sure yet about sending him. If only I could have an aviary in the garden, get him a friend and let him live out his days how he'd like to - away from people!
He's been interacting with gandie more, although this has lead to a damaged beak that now needs regular trimming  :baseballbat: and he has stopped plucking at last.
Still terrifed of people.

Can i ask why you are going to be taking him there? i have probaly missed why i don't get on as much so easier to ask!

Can you not have a aviary and get another grey for him as company?

Or find a memebr with an aviary so you can keep tracks and get updates on how he is doing as once in the parrot zoo i bet you would never know which one he was as there are so many!

Hi Paula.
Stevie is a senegal. I've posted about him a few times. We are pretty sure he was one of the last wild caught birds taken into the Uk. He was given to me by a shop owner when i complained about his standard of care. The owner was going to break his neck anyway so i took him on.
He's been with me for 8 years now. Still very wild, lots of natural behaviours and totally intollerent of people and other animals (although he has been getting on okay with my grey which was quite supprising)
He has finnialy over come his feather plucking which is great and he can also fly now which he couldn't do before.
Stevie is really not your average parrot. He is not kept in a cage and has the roam of the room. I only shut him in at night. He has eaten his way into my wooden buro and quite happily destroyed all paper work inside. This is now his favourite place to be and has been for about 18 months.
He is terrified of people. Hes got a great little character but he really shouldn't been in a house. He needs to be in an aviary with other birds.
The Parrot sanctuary is really my last resort. I cant give him what he needs in the form of an aviary and while I have looked at rehoming him people cant help but want to try and tame him and make him a pet. Its not right for him and I won't have him put under the stresses of someone who wants to try to make him bond, especially as its taken such a long time to stop him feather plucking and its stopped since I have become his sole carer and he sees no other humans now.
I've seen footage on youtube of the parrot zoo and read the blogs on the website. Every sancutary i've been to has been so horribly over crouded and I'm still very unsure on what to do.
At the end of the day he sadly can't stay with me forever. My aim was to always get him as healthy again and find him a forever home. The only problem was its taken a very long time. I would love to keep him for the rest of his life. I've got quite attatched to him but when we eventually move my partner will not tollerate what we all know are natural behaviours and part of owning parrots. Luckly because the others are people friendly and "normal" the won't be an issue but sadly there just wont be the space to give stevie his own room and he will be around people and the dogs in the new home, which means putting him into a cage for long periods of time.

I'm very open to suggestions if anyone can help but at the end of the day he is not a pet and I can no longer give him what he needs. It breaks my heart but what he needs must come first.

Thats a really honest, and from the heart post.

I understand what you are saying about his behaviour and your reluctance to put him into a totally alien environment to what he has become accustomed to.

I really don't know what to suggest, that would be beneficial...it is such a heart breaking story.

I truly wish you all the very best, and hope that you find an acceptable solution to you, your family and Stevie as soon as possible  :rose:

Hi Beakie  i know you have been on before regarding the welfare of your bird & lets face it Beakie this bird needs open space & how many people are in a position to do this  is the main question .  You say hes wild caught . The Parrot Zoo is back open again & is now taking in birds . It has also had massive improvements  ( see the blogs ) & if you want the bird to go into an aviary environment now is the time of year to do it .
