AAAAAaaaawwwwwwwww the collar is on the Severe Macaw. Harley does that where he runs along with his beak rubbing on the perch just like on that picture!! I think so many pluck because they suffer abuse and neglect before they are handed into the Sanctuary. Or they have health issues (which are of course treated).
Then again, sometimes no matter how well you love and care for a bird they pluck anyway!!

Great pics Mandi

That Macaw looks like it's got another type of E- Collar on, I have seen pics of that type in books.

this looks like boston zoo, where my friend was going to send her grey. i'm so glad she didnt as i have heard some bad reports about it. just to point out that anyone considering donating, they already recieve hundreds of pounds for each bird taken in and are already overcrowded  :(

I understand that over this winter the Parrot Zoo is going to have a massive refurbisment & new buildings are going up etc .  Mandi is right if you give a bird up you are asked to make a donation . I know because i  picked  up  an Indian ringneck here  for someone that was going there  last year  & they asked for a 50  donation  (voluntary ) . .

yes she was told she would have to pay 100 plus five pounds a month for the following year. someone else was asked for 350? i wonder if it depends on circumstances? but that is still alot of money considering the amount of birds they take in

The 5 a month you talk about is to bird sponser :secret:  . Anyone can do it  The payments are voluntary  Love it or hate it the end product is where would you rehome about 3000 birds if it wasnt there . Although its a  Sanctuary  it is now classed as a zoo  & zoos santuaries or rescues all rely on support . Theres an article in last weeks cage & aviary birds regarding  a sanctuary in Scotland that has to be made into a Zoo . This Santuary gets very few  visitors & it needs a big cash injection to do it . Anyone who wishes to know more about this i will post up the full story to it

Yes Irene that`s The Island Sanctuary up in Scotland. The birds are missing seeing all the visitors terribly. It`s such a lovely place and they adhere to all the rules but this one is just ridiculous and they have had to close for the time being which is sad for the birds.

As for NPZ, I heard too that they are providing heating over the Winter and renovations are always ongoing. The other thing to think of is that they get birds literally dumped on the doorstep in boxes or hung on the gates in carrier bags. Nobody pays anything for these birds yet the zoo still takes them in, provides healthcare and accomodation etc.

So sad that there are so many unwanted birds out there.
