Will be visiting parrot zoo updated with pics
« on: February 26, 2011, 06:52:07 PM »

And was wondering if they have a gift shop.
Do they sell stuff for parrots or just parrot stuff like cups and cuddly toys etc.

Will take plenty of pictures and report back mon evening.

Probably a stupid question but is there any chance I could bring any illness/disease back with me that  Truman could catch from the other birds.

I work with birds at work but there will obviously be a greater number at the sanctuary. I will change clothes before I have Truman out anyway.

Also if I were to film the birds and play the noises to Truman could this upset/annoy him depending on what the birds were expressing at the time.

Thanks

Mandi or Dave will be able to tell you that
Suppose as long as you change clothes and shower before making contact with Trueman it should be ok.
Think he will find the sounds very interesting
What work do you do?

Hi Bob,

I work in a petshop. That's where I got Truman from. We currently have a Blue and Gold macaw, a Triton cockatoo and a ducop cockatoo  with us. All lovely birds and I never get sick of hearing them say hello. We have had several other greys in since Truman and none of them matched up to him. Then we had one in and he was fantastic. If I didn't have Truman I would have had him in a shot. I was teaching him the adams family and he picked it up in less than a fortnight. Was also saying hello more clearly than Truman. They are obviously like kids and learn at their own pace. When he got sold my collegue tried to get him out the cage and he was flapping about. So I said I would do it cause he liked me better. And when I put my hand in and offered it to him he bobbed his head down. I nearly cried. It is great working with the birds but very hard to not get attached.

Thanks Mandi,
Have seen your pics on another thread. Lovely.

Bit dissapointed that they don't have a gift shop with stuff for parrots. Was hoping they would sell palm oil and the like there. Then I could have stocked up. Never mind. Am sure it will still be a great day. And I will come back with money in my pocket rather than more toys/treats etc.

I may do that Mandi. Before I started working at the petshop the birds didn't have toys in their cages. But they do now. We have a large wooden/rope toy suitable for macaws etc that we sell. I took this apart and made it into several toys and now each bird has part of it in their cage. It worked out well for them and for the shop cause people say "oh that grey/cockatoo etc has that toy, maybe ours will like it" so we have sold more toys. That wasn't the important part for me but it got the manger to allow me to give the birds toys, so I'm happy.

It was an awful day weather wise. Spitting with rain and frezzing cold. I was dressed for the day in my wellies but by god I couldn't feel my toes by the end. And my hands were colder still.

I left feeling very sad for the birds. To liken it to something, if any of you have seen I Robot where they describe the original robots and how they have been stored due to the new improved ones and they say how when they see light they all move towards it. That was what the birds were like. Many of them were constantly on the sides of the aviaries and the others flew to them as people walked by. They didn't have toys in with them in the large aviaries only wooden perches, some which hung from the top so moved like a swing. They looked quite barren. Whether it was due to the weather and lack of sun/warmth but the aviaries appeared very dark.
A few were obvious pluckers. A very sorry for himself looking grey who was for want of a better word whimpering and shivering.

Many of them spoke, including a triton who said hello charlie. Plus in the pic of the 2 amazons, the one on the right laughed like a child, which was unnerving to me, I don't know why.

I don't know why but I expected it to be bigger. We got there at about 11 and walked round 3 times. We left at about 12.45.

When we had walked through the walk through aviary and realised that was it I was a bit shocked. I was surpriesd that it was the ring necks that were the birds that flew down to us the most. Not a bird I have really liked the look of before. Oh they had rabbits in some of the enclosures too.

and i know exactly how you feel when you say you feel sorry for them  :cry2:
but i look at it this way, my entrance fee helps to care for them

The Ringnecks look very friendly I have always liked them.
Which other Parrots were in the walk through aviary?
As to the Greys I can imagine it is very sad as most of these were family pets in their past, and none of us on here could ever envisage giving them up, but most of them were probably in bad homes, confined to their cages with no interaction etc and they are flock animals so hopefully they are happier now.
With that amount of Greys together I would be interested to know how they are fed, even with my two Traff the dominant one would get all the food first, sohow do they manage with all them?
Maybe Dave and Irene or Mand know

It was wierd seeing that many greys together. You couldn't have counted them there were too many. We gave them some walnuts/hazelnuts etc that I took in. Thought they would only have monkey nuts there.

As soon as they saw you had food many were talking or screaming. Some were taking food from others but didn't seem in an overly aggressive way.
In one of the smaller enclosures there was a ringneck and a conure together I gave the ringneck a nut and the conure came and took it. The look on the ringnecks face was priceless. I swear he looked at his empty claw in disbelief.

I would have liked to have seen some stats on where all the birds came from. Did any come from breeders/petshops that couldn't sell them?
Many if not all must have been pets at some point. That is why I think I found it sad to hear the amazon laughing and the other birds saying hello, wolf whistling etc. One customer who comes in the petshop where I work said that the staff at the sanctuary said that if you have a bird for 2 years you have beaten the odds. Most they say last 6 months.

I've had my Truman for 5 months and love him beyond anything I could have thought. I'm not ashamed to say that after I first brought him home I cried cause I was so happy. I'd wanted a grey for so long and he was better than I could have thought.

Other birds in the walk through were budgies, conures, cockys and a grey bird that I didn't recognise. The one in the nest box. They were bigger than greys.

The birds are often fed on trays then the trays i believe are left in for about an hour at a time. This way observation can be done if any bird isnt eating . There are so many people that give up greys that a while ago that aviary the greys are in was doubled in size . . I am an active member of their forum & have been for many years. Often in a morning when they open up they find parrots in boxes just dumped overnight outside the gate by people who dont want em They have even been left there in mid winter & their feet have been frozen  . The rabbits are there to eat the excess food that is dropped in the aviaries . The sanctuary is run on very  limited resourses & whatever anyone thinks good or bad  a lot of those birds would be dead if they wernt there. I could fill this forum with horror stories thats happened to some of those  birds .  Like Mandy says it needs people to go & support it & not to critise it . A few months ago they had a trip of dutch avian vets there who left them a 500 donation . The last cheque we sent there was for 50 . You  may ask how i know all this ? My  Birdie buddy is Enquiries Officer for the Sanctuary   She also boards my  birds when we go on holiday . Aside from our  avian vet she is  the most knowlegable person i have ever met regarding parrots she also owns about 70 of  her  own . After the Santuary took a lot of critisim a while ago Colin O Hara who is on the National Parrot Society Council  ( I also belong the National Parrot Society )visited there & said that before anyone decided to go into  pet parrot ownership should visit there & talk to the staff . Once again he took a lot of hammer in the avian press but Colin been Colin was unrepentant  & stuck to his guns Why because he,s spot on . Hes someone else who i have known many years & havea great deal of respect for . I refuse to be drawn into arguments or debates regarding the NPS this is the first & last statement i will be making on it on this forum as I have been associated with it for many years  D&I

I can understand the need for the rabbits being there and they looked like they did a great job. They definately didn't look hungry. They were the biggest rabbits I had ever seen.

I'm not saying it is a bad place and I would like to go again. If I ever come into any money I would like to donate toys/food etc. I imagine if you go often you really notice the birds increasing.
Do they ever breed do you know? What happens to the young? I would have thought with ever increasing numbers then they wouldn't purposely breed them. But it's not as simple as that is it.

Do any of the birds ever get re-homed either. What if thet get a bird handed in who is so friendly and people orientated that they get depressed when taken to the sanctuary.

Obviously they would need to home check, so I suppose it's having the staff/time to do this.

Sorry just more things I have been thinking about.

That is why it is so sad though. If the birds weren't there , then more than likely they would have been put to sleep.
Just remembered there were kuckabura's [that's so not the right spelling] there too. A mum and 2 babies. The guy there said she is teaching them not to call all the time. Apparently they only usually do it first thing in the morning then earler evening. So mum has to teach them not to do it all the while. Unfortunately we didn't here them.

Well said Dave, if people did not buy parrots on a whim, or find out that they are noisey messy and expensive to keep. And then dump them onto a society whose funds are stretched.
