How can I stop Nala's noise?
« on: March 08, 2017, 05:44:25 PM »

Hello,

My grey Nala has recently been making this very loud high pitched noise and I'm trying to get her to stop making that noise but all my attempts have failed.

She is a year and a half old and she only makes this noise when I'm with her but if my partner is with her she whistles and says the odd word but she doesn't with me which is strange it makes me think it's a mating thing cause I'm the only person who can pick her up and stroke her but she whistle or talk to me she'll  just make this noise constantly.

Can anyone help me?

Hi can you post a vid ?
Behaviours and sounds you don't like are best ignored

Probably a sound she's either learned or picked up from sounds around her, alarms etc are a favourite, and i'm betting you to,d her to stop or be quiet when you heard her doing it? Or reacted in some way?
If so you've just made it a game and she'll keep doing it if you react. As Mandi says, always ignore what you don't like either in sounds or behaviour & praise what you do.

Honestly, they are masters at winding us up :)

That's certainly a household noise she's picked up (or from outside )
You really need to ignor it
Even put her back on her cage and turn your back if she does it
Praise nice noises xx

You don't have a chair that scrapes the floor when you move it do you? sounds similar, its so funny trying to decipher the sounds they make, suddenly you'll hear that sound when you've done something or moved something and it'll click!

In all honesty that's not too bad of a sound, mine picked up the neighbours house alarm that used to go off all the time, took a while to ignore that!

I've tried everything the past couple months and nothing works.

She also says hello and peekaboo but not when I want her too she won't do it when I ask her too with a treat to reward her.

The thing they aren't wind up toys, they have their own mind, if they don't want to do something they won't, and you can't make them.

Think of her as a toddler, that's what she is essentially a mind of a two year old, but she's also still a wild creature.

How old is she now? Not all greys talk so you're quite lucky that she does, the fact that she says what she wants when she wants is irrelevant

I would love it if it was a actual sound lol

Also would any of you know why she won't make any other noise at me she sometimes copies a sound or whistle I make but she will not copy any word I say. But all I ever get is this noise. But like I said she'll talk and Wolf whistle to my girlfriend but not me.

Daniel are you her chosen person ?
If so her speaking like your girlfriend makes sense
If she sees you as her 'partner' then she will see your girlfriend her competition
So she sees tori girlfriend interact with you and you react back so she thinks if she sounds like your girlfriend then you'll be the same with her x

I am her chosen person,

What do you guys recommend for me to do to get Nala talking properly. At the moment I have just started offering a sunflower seed and getting her to copy a noise and that has worked fine so I am now repeating hello or oh no so she copies, no luck yet.
