Edit that! You mustn't post the full ring number in public!

I have a ring question please. I have tried to contact Sensi's breeder again to  give him an update. I have had no replies to previous emails etc, and then i noticed that on a forum somewhere he was selling his birds abt 2008? to go travelling, so i assume that he is no longer breeding. So my question is if the worst happened and Sensi escaped, usually they could trace him to the breeder through his ring details and he would contact me, but how can Sensi be traced to me now? Is there any way of registering his ring number anywhere? He is not chipped as of yet.
thanks for any help

I'm afraid there is no where to register the ring details as far as I'm aware.  I had thought that the ring details were so that you could identify your bird if they escaped not to trace back to the breeder anyway. Sorry.

As far as I know ring numbers aren't logged. You should make a note of it as if he ever did escape that would prove he belonged to you if he were found.
Micro chipping is the easiest way to permanently identify your bird

Thanks, i thought it would be the case :( I assumed as it had the breeder/aviary details they could trace it back to them?  I have his ring details anyway on his hatch certificate, so that's one thing. we have wanted to get him chipped, but trying to find a vet to do it is another thing. we rung a few and they say they will only do it if he needs to be sedated/knocked out for any reason. dont want to sedate him just for chipping because of risk of the anesthetic blah blah .  they also said it was to painful to do without, also Sensi will not let anyone else handle him lol, so if he moved it could go wrong :(
not too many avian vets near us. we want him dna checked too, but i cannot bring myself to pluck the poor little fella, he will hate me. took me 4 years to let me near him after holding a grudge against me lol, even now, he is temperamental  :cheekywink:

The anaesthetic is very safe. They only need the tiniest bit and while he was out the vet could take some blood for the DNA

Yes, there is rarely a problem with aneasthesia these days.   But make sure you use a  specialist avian vet.  S/he will aneasthetise with Isoflourane by gas.  I  have stayed with many birds during aneasthesia and not had any problems.   Micro- chipping is registered with the Kennel Club and registrsation is permanant (they don't go away!).  But when the bird is sold you have to inform the KC of the new owner.  It's a bit like doing the log book for a car.

Re. rings.  Where you see a bird with a *closed* ring on it, you know the bird was raised using parental deprivation (was 'hand-reared').   Breeders rarely ring *parent raised* birds, since some parents will try to remove the chick's ring; and if they cannot remove it (!) , they may damage or kill the chick.    Where parent raising is used (which should be always! ) then an older chick/sub-adult, can be ringed with an open/split ring.

Yes, I could name a few  breeders who actually put aluminium rings on parrots, even macaws and cockatoos!   How dumb is that!  Any parrot bigger than a Senegal can damage a aluminium ring, and so, its own foot.  Rings should always be of stainless steel if they are used on any parrot-like bird.   If you have a bird with an alumimium ring on it, have a vet remove it, and make a formal complaint to the breeder.

All this said, if you  have a bird bigger than a Senegal micro-chipping is better than ringing.

Although true in the majority of cases there is the odd exception to this. Nico was hand reared but has a split ring. As a chick her toes were too long (or oddly shaped)  to get the ring on without injuring her so she got a split ring instead. Her brother and sister both had closed rings and were raised exactly the same as her.

! would guess the CRS is the breeders initials and that she was the 9th chick born that year. Just a guess though. It's similar to Nico's ring

Some rings don't give the age (Nico's doesn;t) but I have heard the colour can denote the hatch year. Is it a coloured ring?

And yes I agree about people being more honest. It is infuriating and means that birds don't get the right care they need early enough  :grumble:

hi weedebs
does the your ring on your birds leg look like this ring in the photo the 19 is just the ring number i might order 20 rings and there will come 1 to 20 the letters jjh these are my name initials the  10 is the year which for these rings it was 2010, and as you can see the color is orange. this years color is blue and lastly the letter v is the ring size which is the correct size for a african grey...
i must admit i don't remember a red colored ring but the breeder might have ordered these just for himself

It only has 9 CRS V on it, so i presume 9 is 2009 which would make sense as i was told she was 2?  All writting is same way up, same size etc.  Maybe it is orange

I wouldn't overly worry about the age thing - they live so long a few weeks here or there really wouldn't make any difference hun x
