When I brought Mischa home she was 11 weeks and the breeder asked me if I wanted a band on her. I was not educated on the bands so I told her to put it on. The band is tagged and registered. I was there the day they were hatched so I know that the greys were not wild caught. I was told by several people that the band is not safe and should be removed. Mischa has not had any issues with the band yet.

i think one of my bonded pair is an imported bird , the papers i have with her say that its from a dr.van den wouwer ludwig from belgium , sex female with the ring number LVDW 2516 the ring is on her left leg , the other grey i have with her has a black ring on his right leg but i cant get close enough to see what is on it

neither did i , dont know if it is still legal , but the paper i have is from belgium and dated 2005 , so obviuosly it was imported well before i bought her

I'm not sure what the rules are now, know there was a ban when we had the bird flu scare, but not sure if it has been lifted or not.

no probs liz wasnt thinking that , the person i bought them from , he had only had them for 5 months before deciding greys where not his thing

My guess would be that it was a perfectly legal transaction, with full agreement with the authorities. I can't imagine anyone putting their ring or name on an illegal import

think your spot on there , why do they put rings on either leg ? is it for sexing purposes or doesnt it matter what leg a ring goes on

I believe that the choice of leg is a sexing thing. However, there appears to be no international standard for ringing, consequently the system one breeder uses may differ immensely from another breeder

As long as Paperwork is filled and Rubber Stamped and certain conditions are followed such as CITES etc then animals are moved across the world every day. The flu would put a halt to birds being moved but think that has since been lifted.

I have been wondering about the rings on my Greys, if i should get them removed or not because they are always biting at it, but its not tight or things annoying it. Does anyone have any advice...thanks

If the skin under it ok? Nico always plays with her ring as well but it isn't tight and the skin under isn't read or swollen so I think it is just normal

Sophie, came with a ring on her foot. Never really questioned why, when I adopted her at age two. Don't really question it now. She doesn't mind it, so why should I? Nancy

Rosie has a ring on her left leg, it shows the remains of having been blue which ties in with the age I was given for her of two years old. It's fine and not bothering her in any way - does the fact that it's on her left leg imply gender? The guy who sold her to me seemed to think she was a girl but didn't have her dna tested as far as I'm aware.
I haven't managed to read the ring yet; I'll have a go later on today when Peter gets in. (That way I can read it out and he can write it down!)

Esme. The only way to determine the sex of a Grey is by DNA testing. Many people only guess the actual gender and they may be 50% correct some of the time, but you need to be 100% you can see www.avianbiotech.co.uk

My envelope from biotech is here, yippee. In preparation for sending it off, I read Rosie's ring - but I'm frightened of putting the wrong thing on the biotech form if I've read it wrongly, my eyesight isn't what it used to be - is it better to leave this info off the form than maybe put an incorrect letter in?

It doesn't really matter what you put on the form, it is for your use really, some put the ring number and some the birds name

Have you plucked the feathers yet?
