What Makes A Good Parrot Owner?
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:04:37 PM »

These opinions are mine and not necessarily the opinions of AGPC.  A good parrot owner (or indeed any bird) is one that spends time with the birds, interacts with them, lets them out of the cage for long periods of time to fly around and play. A good parrot owner is one that buys toys and the best food that they can afford, they buy treats and they train the birds.  All that is very important for the well being of the bird but there is one thing that is more important than any of the things I have mentioned and that is ...knowing your bird and knowing when to act for their own good and safety.  The most important thing of being a parrot owner is being responsible for their little lives.  If we are ill we call the doctor, if the bird is ill, we call the vet sometimes there is no time to lose and you have to get the bird there fast, other times it's a routine check, nails and beaks that sort of thing.  Occasionally it's knowing whether to clip wings or not, it is not a thing to be taken lightly, you don't just wake up one moring after Polly has once again taken a bite out of the door jamb and say "We'll clip his wings, that'll stop him" or "We can have the windows open if he can't fly out of them!"  You don't even sleep on the idea, you work around it, you see if there is anyway else you can solve the problem
without having to clip his wings, like put a scarey soft toy on the top of the door to keep him away, like training him to get "Off" when he's told to, stick training, recall...all these things could well make your bird a lot better at interaction and behaving in an acceptable way. To have your bird behaving well and well trained doesn't happen overnight, it takes weeks, months and sometimes even years to get your parrot to be socially acceptable and the really good parrot owner has tried all this and still looks for more things to help their bird, albeit changing diet, more sleep or wing clipping.  You have to KNOW your bird and KNOW what's right for him, you and maybe the rest of the flock if you have other birds. Take time to get to know your bird, his movements, his
reactions to things, the body language tells so much, once you KNOW your
bird then you are in a better position to know what's best for him, you
and the other birds. Everybody has an opinion on what is the best thing for you to do with your bird, it's really good to be able to listen and take advice, to try out the things suggested but only you know what it's really like living with a bird that isn't very tame or at worst downright nasty.  Training takes time, they might pick up how to touch a stick for a treat in five minutes flat, but training to be "nice" is a different matter all together, that takes time, patience and getting to KNOW your bird like nobody else could possibly know him, that to me is a
good parrot owner.

Notice I haven't said anything about the bird talking or whether they even like you.....that doesn't matter in the least you can still be a good parrot owner even if your bird hates you and never says a word.

Very good post Pat, I'm sure people will see how difficult it is for those of us who have birds that have "problems" and these problems can't be sorted over night, I can only speak for myself, but the work with Charlie Boy has been going on for only three short months and is still ongoing, it is painful from the bad bites, long etc but as long as he's happy then I'm happy.

I think bird keeping is difficult anyway, birds that have problems such as plucking etc only add to the importance of knowing your bird.  Birds aren't like any other "pet" they need you to understand their body language for training and learning, with a dog you need them to understand you to train them to sit, lie down, leave it or whatever.

I wrote that with Mandi in mind I have to admit. She has gone 2 years of trying her best for Dave and getting to know him and it's still with a heavy heart that she has decided to have is wings clipped.  That to me is one brilliant parrot owner, she cares so much for her birds that she spent all that time watching him, seeing what he does, how he affects the other birds and then coming to the conclusion of getting his wings clipped.  She is the best example of a caring owner that I know of.  Look at what she has done for little Peach when others would have given up ages ago.  It's not all about who provides the biggest and best toys, food or cage, it's who takes the time to study and learn what the needs are of their birds. Mandi...  respect, you are a true caring parrot owner and a star  :flowers:

Thanks guys. :flowers:
I don't really see myself as doin anything special ( though my friends may think I'm a little mad)
I didn't take Dave on to rehome him
I took him in warts n all and I'll try all I can to improve his life
Same as Peach I knew at 18 weeks with her problems already starting it wouldn't be easy but I won't give in trying
I may cry a few tears but I'll keep helping her to live a better happier life
Just like I do the other 3
But again guys I thank you , your the best :cheekkiss:

Thats an excellent post, and an absolute mirror reflection of Mandi.

I have to say, Mandi has gone through so much, and she never ever gives up, but instead, tries new tactics, makes changes, and learns from each and every "happening" - An inspiration to many, and certainly to me

Very well said Pat ! Taking on a parrot should never be some rush decision.

I went into a garden centre yesterday near me, and I saw this poor little grey sat in the corner in this huge cage with like one or two branch's and some mouldy old toys, that looked like they had been there a long time!
I said to a worker if he comes out to play etc, and he said he is just left in there day and night  :nono:
That is how NOT to do it.

And with regards wing clipping... I would never take that right away from my bird.
How would you feel having your legs cut off, just so u couldnt run about everywhere!

I hope that the little grey gets a good home.

As for wing clipping we don't want to start a debate on that, it's been done to death and as has been said in other threads there are exeptional circumstances.

Hi all I agree with you pat. Everyday I watch my Chester and his behaviour his needs I study him. I know I have a lot to learn but no matter what I only have his best interests at heart and I am willing to give him a good life no matter what.
I understand there just being a bird and I don't want anything of him just for him to have a good life being himself. I do train him when he feels interested in it and I learn something new everyday.
You are so spot on. X

Fantastic post Pat.  100% agree.   Anyone who is new to the site or just popped in and read this, it would help them to make up their minds.

I know I have certainly changed the way I do things around the house, the time I spend with Elliott.

I honestly don't know what I would do without him now.   Its definately at 100% commitment.   But worth every %.

Thanks for the post Pat and taking the time to write it.   :cheekkiss:
