It is awful the amount of ads a day we get people trying to put up birds for sale on the main website which are scams which is why we now need to approve all ads before they go live to stop that!
You can tell a mile away which are scams, stock photos stolen from website as you just said Squid, Bad english and when they say all injections given  or KC registered (Kennel Club) Dogs!! LOL

Here is a link to something Rick wrote about parrot scams on our blog -

http://www.african-grey-parrots.co.uk/blog/2009/03/parrot-scams-8-things-to-watch-out-for-to-keep-your-money-safe/

They are good tips to look out for when looking to buy a pet, also ask for the home phone number and if you can go and see the bird, i would never buy a bird without seeing it first...

Hope that helps some people, feel free to add anymore tips you can think of to help keep people away from the scammers

Don;t know if a scammer or not, but I phoned a breeder up several times before Xmas and again before Easter in response to their (newspaper) advert.
they never even bothered returning my calls, so I bought my bird elsewhere.

while looking for a breeder to buy jasper from i came across a few dodging ones who claim that you are adopting the parrots(it was always a pair) asking you to answer a load of questions in an email never speak to you on the phone at the end it turns out that they have recently moved from london to ireland then ask you to pay for flying the parrots back to england upfront. i came across 2 or 3 of these.

lol very similar to one i ran into just before i found the breeder i am picking mine up from.
this idiot was running an add on oodle
ad read, 6 month old african grey for sale cheap to a good home.
reason for sale "relocation"
listed as for sale in the london area so i have the guy a call
naturally there was only a mobile number attached to the ad.
he went on to explain in a hardly understandable accent how he had just moved to scotland and has a deal with a courier company who has agreed to deliver the bird anywhere in the UK for him for a set price of roughly 250 gbp. when i told him that was fine, just have them bring the bird out for me to have a look at and i will pay them cash on collection after i see the bird.
he comes back with "oh no, they dont do cash, you have to pay by credit card before they will even bother to try to deliver so they know they arent wasting their time"
at this i laughed, unfortunately i have dealt with morons like this in the past who try to get your bank details then dissapear.
i told the guy, " so basically the way i see it is you dont have, never have had nor will never have a bird for sale, all your trying to do is sit there running fake ads in the hopes that someone will be desperate enough for a bird to agree with your payment arrangements, then in 10 minutes you have one of your friends, probably with the same unintelligable accent as yourself, call and pretend to be the courier while you get cc details and then throw out your pay as you go mobile chip and use the card numbers to buy your blow up dolls and fund your underage porn collection" at thsat point he decided it was best to hang up on me..tried the number 3 times earlier today just to annoy him more. seems its been shut off tho lol
shame, was fun for a minute =ox

Hi Tracy, those numbers that start with those no`s are only used really by dodgy people, they can not be obtained in this country any more so if the seller has a number like this you can tell they are scammers before you even read the ad
Have a look on this site
http://pets.oodle.co.uk/?q=african+grey+parrot&inbs=1
Most of the ads on here are scammers, i try and worn people all the time by writing this on the bottom of every add i think is a scam
This advert is a scam to con people out of money, they tell you that you can`t see the parrot but they will send it by courier but you have to pay the delivery fee around 200-300 but the parrot never comes, beware of phone numbers starting 0702,0703,0704 & 0705 as scammers mainly use them

i seriously should have read this weeks ago.
i put in an add on gumtree that i wanted to buy an african grey and this GORDON SMITH emailed me.
he sounded okay in the first few emails.
told me re located to god knows where and had to sell his birds.
he was asking 250 for each bird who i thought was too cheap to be honest
and some alarm bell went off in my head
but you still want to think the best of people.. dont you????
he told me he had return flight tickets for the birds back to london....
when you dont realize its a scam..
or you actually dont think people can be that evil you believe them..
well i did.

but then he suddenly changed..
he claimed he was getting the bird delivered to my door the next morning for 50 pounds AND I DID FINALLY SMELL A RAT!!!!
i recieved what seemed like an email from a delivery company CLEARLY FAKE telling me my bird was going to be delivered on my door.
(im not sure how to post the email here but i really want you to see it as if i was older or very young and didnt know better i could have thought the email was real)
i told gordon smith (clearly not his name) to stick it
and he had the cheek to email me the next day asking if i had recieved the bird!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i dont think anyone just get an african grey cus of the sake of it.
its probably something you have thought about for a long, long time.
so its heartbreaking to meet someone like gordon smith.
you poor your heart out to this scammer (not knowing its a scam)
telling him how long you longed for an african grey and how you swear you will look after the african grey for life and then realize its A SCAM!!!!

i will make it my mission in life to stop people like him.. who ever he is.. from doing this to anyone else cus its the worse experience EVER!!!

It sure pays to go and see a bird for sale before laying any cash out, i went to the owners house when i bought mine and struck a deal with the owner and took him home that very day.
The owner was a very genuine chap had everything to hand that a new owner would need such as its diet/bedtime times/2 boxes of toys/bag of vits/food/a list of words it spoke/insurance papers/ finally a list of minor vet visits none seriose having its ring cut off was about the worse problem for him.

I have met the scrotes that do try it on though but i really do pride myself as having more lead in my pencil to fall for a scammer.

I know what you are saying Polo, and the saying is usually true that, if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
But, sometimes, you don't always realise you are being scammed a the time, as you get so into it, especially when it is a thing of the heart like poor EMCA.  You just want it to b true, and convince yourself that it is.

Thing is, there are some  real twits that feed off of lovely genuine caring people
