About blaming yourself for the feeding
« on: April 06, 2017, 02:47:22 AM »

I know a couple people on another site who refuse to become Harrison "cult members," who feed fortified seed/pellet mix. I gave my CAG who did pass on 2/16 3D seed/pellet diet from Walmart, because it got great reviews, a few of them saying they had fed it to their parrot or CAG for years, one healthy at age 41. The ingredients are extensive, include lactobacillus, all the vitamins and minerals. I also just in the last year started offering Harrison fine and course pellets.

Yet I was also reading this from a well known avian vet Dr Rice: The healthiest birds he ever saw were years ago owned by the mountain peasants of Mexico. "They ate what the farmers ate." There was no computer then, no mixes of any kind and certainly no Harrison pellets. He was noting specifically their bright colored plumage as a sign of  good health.

So please do not beat yourself up about a seed diet or anything else, since we don't even know what the exact correct diet is. IMHO it's like with people, if you eat steak and potatoes with a little desert, but you're active and get plenty of exercise and have fruit and veggies, too, then you're okay. We just don't know so if we don't know we might as well not waste energy on guilt about a mystery topic.

Eleanor I tend to agree, pellets aren't everything. Most seed mixes are good quality, as long as it's clean looking, not sticky or bulked out with sunflowers and peanuts, then I don't see a problem x
