Charlie's Plucked Legs :-(
« on: August 30, 2013, 02:58:09 PM »

Well here they are. My little fellas legs. He started plucking after being in the aviary an now he keeps going at them.:(
I am a bit happier today as we have spotted new pins on the back of his leg so i really hope he leaves those alone and allows his little legs to feather up again.
Bless him. It's really sad.

Jo.  How old is Charlie?   It amazes me how they can reach.   It must be awful not knowing what brings it on.   Because you are a fantastic paront. :)):))

I know they're not too bad, it's just he's never ever plucked before and to see them like this it really upsets me. :cry2:
Dexter has plucked his wings for a while now and I'm sort of used to that if you know what I mean, but Charlie has never attempted this until we tried the aviary. :cry2:
You're absolutely right Karen, I don't want them to get worse but I will deal with it like you guys all do.
Awww Donna, you made me giggle with what you said about Bobby, bless him.
Thanks Soo, I suppose it's with me not being used to it that it really shocks you when you come in to find he's plucked even more out.  :cry2:

Hi Lesley. We put Charlie in the aviary outside, when he came back in overnight he plucked his leg, when we tried to put him in the next day he was hesitant but we managed to get him in, well..he plucked again that evening when he was put back in his cage. So we kept trying and trying and then we tried putting his cage in the aviary with and without the other greys in their cages and the result is still the same...Charlie plucking his legs, Dexter plucking his wings and George plucked until he bled so  we held off from using the aviary with them and none of them have plucked since really. We have continued to put them out in the sun but only in their cages and they're happy with that so that's the way we are going.
Charlie is three Lesley so only a baby really bless him.  :baby:
Thanks for the confidence boost because at times I do feel bad for having to sell my aviary but I just can't have them so stressed. At least they go outside in their cages in the sun and they're more than happy with that.  :cheekkiss:
I must say though Lesley my little Charlie has never been the same since the breeder clipped him at 16 weeks.  :cry2: poor little soul.

George and Dexters plucking has worsened since using the aviary Mandi.  :cry2:

They hadn't pulled at their feathers for a while and then after using the aviary it all kicked off again, but Charlie has never plucked until the last few weeks as we have had them all out in the sunshine with it being nice weather.

I have been watching them all like a hawk over the last two months or so and I've noted it down in a diary when they've come back inside if there has been any changes in their behaviour, if I have given them a new toy or if I have tried to get them to step up several times that day for instance, I've also noted own where they've plucked and when it was noticed  so if I look back at that I can see that the plucking has ceased in all of them since we stopped using the aviary. It's not the be all and end all for them. They still go outside in the sun and, I think it was John who said, they may just be birds who need the security of their cages when they're outside and I think he's absolutely right.
I wouldn't be happy putting them back in the aviary for it to kick off again.  :cry2:

Aww thanks Lesley. :cheekkiss: I know it's the right thing for them, and I feel much happier since they haven't been in and the plucking has ceased.
