Growing feathers but still plucking a few?
« on: October 27, 2014, 07:56:31 PM »

Hi all.

As some of you may know, we inherited a little one called Gnasher who was a tad unhappy at his previous home. Most of his bare chest, and a good bit of his underwing (both sides) have been plucked. Since he moved in with us (~3 weeks) he has got substainal growth on his neck but he is still plucking feathers. These aren't fully grown feathers that he is plucking. More very little barely grown ones. Baby feathers if you will. They still have a little blood on them but my wife is very concerned about this behaviour while I think he is just getting rid of bad feathers. May I add aswell that he has just plucked 3 feathers now (small ones) and they are the first he has plucked since being with us.

We spray him with Aloe Vera water and his diet is Hagans Tropimix.

Any input as to what might be going on?

Pluckin can be caused by a number of things
It would be best to have his blood tested via a avian vet to rule out any illness
Then you can work on the behaviour side if it all comes back clear
Some pluckers are just that 'a plucker' and the habit will never be broken
As long as tests rule out he is fit and healthy you may just have to except him the way he is x x

Whatever your doing today, do it with a smile and remember, there are thousands of people who would want to be in your shoes

i smile cause you have all finally driven me insane!
