Help please
« on: June 05, 2014, 06:46:18 PM »

I have had Sammy for nearly two weeks now before then he had been caged for nearly 15 years. My step m lost her husband a year ago and it was his parrot... It was only her then that looked after him... She would only be gone for about 4 hours at a time, each time he plucked she would dance around and distract him. I am out of the house from 8.30 until 3.30 he is out of his cage in the morning before work and after work from 3.30 ... We then have cuddles early evening til about 9pm.  He plucked his neck before I had him but while I am at work he plucks ... He has now plucked his whole neck and chest :-( ... He does not like toys in his cage ... So I leave him card and paper to tear and leave the radio on etc... My step mum is stressing now as he looks worse than when she had him ... Should he go back ? If he did he would be cage bound again as she is too scared to let him out :-( please help is he better to stay with me and come out but be left alone in the day or go back where he has company most of the day but is not aloud out ?

It is early days and maybe he just needs time to settle into his new routine
If he has been checked by a vet and said to be healthy inside and out then the feathers are just cosmetic at the moment
His well bein is more important and bein cage bound ain't good for him
Thread paper strips through his bars
Maybe wrap his feed In parcels of paper so he has to work for his meals
It will occupy him that little but more :)
Are you spraying him ? And what about a uv light ??
These are all things that will help improve his feather condition xx

How long does it take them to get used to a new routine ? ... He is 35 and cage bound on and off for nearly 20 years !! Is it too late ? :-( I have tried spraying him with warm water but not sure if he likes it he just looks confused he has never had this done before ! I have started putting some palm oil and honey on a piece of whole grain toast he loves it and thought this may help... He has also been on a seed diet and am trying to change this too so masses of changes for him ! Am I doing too much ? X

Awww he is beautiful
It's never too late to improve his life
He could have a lot goin on inside after all these years of a seed diet
Try a fruity pellet, it may tempt him more :)
Palm oil go sparing as he is on a seed diet nd both are full if fat x

Ok thank you ... I have mixed his seed with pellets but was thinking maybe I should change him over completely as he picks ... How long does it take for greys to get used to new routines ? ... Should I continue to spray him ? If so how often ? Sorry for all these questions x

He defo needs a spray, his feathers are his clothes and they will need washing from time to time (couple times a wk min)
Just think he has known the same routine for many years so your routine is still all very new
Just give him time
As for the pellet conversion

Take out his feed at night as he goes to bed
If your feeding a fruit flavoured pellet you can give him them dry , if you shoes Harrison's for example you can soak in a little juice to tempt him
Leave this and only this in all day
And if you feel the need you can offer one spoon iv his normal seed of a evening for just a hr befor he goes to bed
He won't starve himself but he has been on seed for a very long time and he may need to be weaned as little different to younger birds xx
