Not so much plucking but chewing them off !!
« on: April 29, 2013, 07:53:30 PM »

Okay a few weeks ago Red decided he was goin to start chewing his feathers. He was over preening at first but he's now at the point he has only down feathers round his neck. I've changed him to a pellet diet, bought an avian light, spray him 2-3 times a week, changed his nighttime cover back to the original one he had but he still seems to be doing it. Help I'm worried for the little man now what else can I do ??? The vet seems to think he's fine and showing no signs of illness.

Kirsty if you doin all the above, and plenty Interaction then there's not much e,se you can do
Maybe try to make him forage for his dry feed to help keep him busy
Fill hs cage with his fave toys, shredables are good for pluckers x x

Ps if you use aloe Vera for spraying, make sure you soak him in just water one day a wk to rid the residue it will leave x x

He may be going through moult,  spray him every day with hot water, when it comes out bottle warm water is cold ,so try hot water and test it on your arm to make sure not to hot when spraying .

If the vet says he is fine ,that's brilliant,  has he got lots of preening toys to shred and pull to bits .
Some birds just do this and there is nothing you can do about it.

Does he get lots of interaction with the family and out of cage time. Xx

Hi there I do use hot water and its warm when it comes out. He has loads of toys plus the newspaper packages which he loves. I did think today that his favourite toy that I've had to keep replacing since I got him broke again and I hadn't replaced for a few weeks so he didn't have it. I went and got him one straight away. Now aloe Vera juice I have some here from holland and Barrett maximum strength. Is this okay or has it got to be a certain one ??

Not sure on the strength of the Aloe but using it every time you spray will just clog up his feathers, so you will still need to spray him with water too

The aloe needs to be diluted so when it is sprayed it doesn't feel sticky on your hands x

Great I spray him 2-3 times a week now so ill alternate between aloe and just water. His new habit is to try and drink the spray from the bottle will this be okay with the aloe Vera.

Mines the same Kirsty. Mine begin to pluck then stopped. Now he just chews and snips his feathers but I'm not too bothered as long as I can't see any flesh and it is better than plucking. Regulate the showers more. Daily if you could. I give mine daily showers and he has stopped chewing his feathers. A wet bird doesn't preen.
