Peach.... my story in pictures
« on: September 05, 2012, 06:19:58 PM »

this is what Peach looked like at 18 wks

at around 11 months i think it was i woke up one morning to this

couple days later one morning

of course it was another vet trip, we had already had every test goin but nothing really to worry about, she had slightly high zinc and low calcium, so everything was already put in place to change this time but we had no choice but to collar her for mutilation

feather growth was almost instant

she was still snapping wing feathers as they werent moulting together , so next procedure was shaft pulling to encourage a false moult

her feathers grew back beautiful, but over the following 2 years she was in and out of a collar on a regular basis, the pluckin we could deal with but once she ran out of feathers mutilatuion soon followed  :cry2:
we tried everything to the point where one avain vet advised me to put her out her misery and end her life  :cry2: :cry2: :cry2: of course i didnt listen
(a few pics of her over the times we try removin collar)

as you can see she is a happy little girl
mandylouise1 - 004-2.mp4 Small | Large

As iv already said we tried everything to help with Peach and her pluckin, not that feathers bother me as id grown to except her for who she was, its just the mutilation we couldnt keep letting happen , so my last ditch came on july 20th 2012 when i decided after a few mornings of getting up to a cage full of feathers during another collar break i would leave her uncaged and let her stay out all night(and day) on the java stand
well so far it has worked  :yahoo:
we get hardly any feathers , once we did get a few but i think this was due to her goin in the aviary and thinkin it was a cage
and sometimes if she is unsure/uncomfy with something she will pull a random feather out but its nothing major and not too often that she is bold and patchy  :yahoo:
i dont know if its coincidence but she is also more willing to step up for other family members and even friends
her wings are lookin so much better and i think even the chewing of them has lessoned a awful lot too
whether she will fly or not im not too sure as she has never done it in her 3 yrs of life  :cry2: who cares as long as she is happy

That has actually brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes, she is looking so good now and Mandi, you are a bloody marvel to have stuck with her all this time and tried out all the things that you have.  Well done to you and little Peach.  If Penny was friendlier, I would certainly be following what you did with Peach, I just wish it was possible for me to keep Penny out of her cage all the time to see if that worked, but on the other hand, she was out of her cage all the time in her previous home and she plucked, so maybe that's not the case for her.  It certainly suits Peach though, bless her little heart.  Thanks for sharing that  :cheekkiss:

Im sure I'm lucky too , to have all you guys for support :cheekkiss:
There have been many of tears along the way but fingers crossed we have crossed the hurdle :crossed:
I dread to think where peach would be now as another lady was interested in buying her but needed to sell her cockatoo first
I'm not blowing my own trumpet but I dont think many would go through what I have with peach and still have her with them
I'll keep doin all I can whilst I can :cheekkiss:

Hi Mandi, I'm new to the site.  :ty for telling your story of Peach. We adpoted George (parent reared and badly mis-treated before we had him) 18 months ago and he pulled his feathers out. We are trying all we can to stop him, hopefully he has stopped pulling them out on his back and chest just need to stop him chewing his wings. Unfortunatly for us we can't handle him he bites and squarks if we go near him and he won't even come out his cage. We don't know if he can fly or not. We are now going to try leaving the top of his cage open over night to see if that helps, what do you think??  :crossed

We are also adopting a 14wk old hand reared african grey, would it be a good idea to keep them in seperate rooms or seperate cages in the same room? We are hoping to use Alfie to try and train George into trusting us.

Thanks, Laura

Laura , welcome to the site and the world (though complex) of owning a grey
Peach still chews one of her wings, she just won't allow the flights to come in, but I still hold out hope that maybe one day :crossed

Congrats on your new baby grey :baby:
Obviously separate cages are a must in my opinion, and maybe quarantine them In separate rooms first
That way at least the get to hear one another first befor actually meeting
Keep us posted on now you get on
When does the new baby arrive ?

As for George and his screaming, talk t him from a distance softly, treat him like you wild a child that can sit but nt walk to follow you, explain all your doin
Like "mummy's nipping to the kitchen "
You may feel silly at first but who cares, no one else will hear you
Try not to give so much eye contact, sit by his cage (as close as he allows) and read or talk to him telling him about your day etc, one day you will get closer and closer without the screams
Remember to treat him when he don't scream , even if you just have to drop his treat in his bowl softly slowly xxx

P.S we have a grey no one can handle but he is happy and healthy, who cares if we don't get the cuddles , they don't last long after baby age anyways and as long as I know he is bein cared for to the best of my knowledge I'm happy too :cheekkiss:

reading stuff like this is what helps me to keep going with my ruby. it's very fustrating at times but you just have to accept them for the pain in the butt they like to be sometimes :P and that they are happy, healthy and we do all we can for them!
My birdy still likes to sport the baldy bum, right leg and neck look  :butt: we call her gaptastic to the point where she's started saying it
