Poor Reds done it again but this time in big style !!
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:52:19 PM »

Poor Red has done it again !! He's chewed lots of feathers off this time :(

We went in holiday for a week last week and this time I took him and his cage round to my dads as last time the woman I got to house sit for me has to work and he got lonely. He loves my dad when he comes to visit so I thought he wouldn't mind being at his house. Well he was absolutely fine in himself but at night he plucked or chewed his feathers. I came back to Red with no neck feathers just down. Well since he's been back he's also chewed / plucked his front chest feathers too :( it's such a shame as they were only just coming back from the last time he destroyed them. What can I do ??? I'm at my wits end I love him to bits an personally I don't care if he has feathers or not he's stilly gorgeous baby but I'm wondering if he's happy. He's had the all clear from the vets and they did say sometimes you never get to the route of the problem as to why they pluck !!

Oh silly red :( do you shower him often? Also what's he eating, I suspect a change In scenery could possibly be a reason he may have plucked and maybe missing you while you were away, have you added anything new toys or perches to his cage and is it back in the same spot as before you went away? X

Hi there. He has regular showers and he's now on a pellet diet he's been on that for a good few months now which he enjoys. The only new thing in his cage is some sisal rope which my dad put in there and he plays with it all the time. I had to move his cage yesterday into the playroom as I'm going to be having some work done in the adjoining dining room / kitchen but he's plucked his feathers before the move and to be fair he seems to like it in there and is talking loads in there. Unfortunately he's going to have to stay there for a couple of weeks but I'm sure it's not that as I only moved him yesterday.

Hmmm I wonder what's making him pluck then?  You could buy some of this http://m.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/product_detail.asp?pid=274&prodid=442&cid=77&cm_mmc=Google-_-Aloe%20Vera-_-PS%20-%20Aloe%20Vera%20Juice%20Drink%20-%20MTE-_-%5baloe%20vera%20juice%5d&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CLiHzpy-mLkCFWXKtAodR3gA8Q and dilute it into a spray bottle...dilute it into a spray bottle like the same way you would make a drink of cordial juice and use it to most him say 3 times, then go back to normal water on its own for 3 times and then back to that...see if this soothes his skin as he may be itchy...do you have an avian light? Hi. I just so happen to have some of that in the fridge I bought it for me but its foul lol. Ill give that a go. Thanks.  He had loads of new feathers coming through but seems to have chewed them off too poor little fella. When I stroke him I can feel the ends to the feathers so he's chewing them as opposed to plucking them. I've just given him his first shower with the aloe Vera so I'll see how that goes thanks again. 😃

Oh great...give it a go and see how he gets on then...it's really important though that you don't use it more than 3 times maximum before giving a normal mist with just water on its own :) fingers crossed hope he improves x

Hi thanks very much I'm hoping that's what it was. He's in the playroom for the foreseeable future at the moment he's been in there three days now and seem to be talking a lot more so I'm assuming he likes it better in there lol he is actually in front of a mirror well just the corner of it and this morning he spent ages in the top corner of his cage talking to himself in the mirror. It was very comical he was repeating himself as if he knew it wasn't another bird so was talking for it lol. If he does like it better there then ill leave him be and just move he playroom about about so he fits in better. I'm now thinking perhaps he needs a friend lol.
