About to start harness training - wish me luck
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:12:40 PM »

Recieved babys Aviator harness today (from Scarletts Parrots essentials - excellent online shop) and already looked at the DVD that came with it.

Lots of good advice on the DVD but I think I may be playing the DVD more than once as there is quite a lot to take in.

I have the harness on top of baby's cage and he was a little hesitant of it first but ok after 5 minutes (as it wasn't moving).

I then had him out on my knee whilst watching the DVD and had the harness on my other knee. again he was a little hesitant at first but ok after a couple of minutes.
I did show it to him and he even had a little investigative nibble of it.

So far so good.

I suspect it will be a long haul to get the harness on and off but since the weather will soon be turning for the worse, I have winter to train him ready for next year. so no need to rush and I will go at his pace.

At the moment I am not sure if it will work out as baby doesn't mind my lifting either wing with a finger when he wants head scratches but won't accept me touching his belly but does tolerate (but not enjoy) me touching his foot.

Do you think I am wasting my time or an achievable cause ?

Oooo good luck  :yahoo:  Mine is OK with the harness as he's still young and has had it on since he was very young, but I have to give him a treat every step of the way, thats fine by me as long as I can get it on and off, its literally head through, treat, wing through, treat and so on.
My previous bird wouldn't even allow it near him let alone on him, patience and treats/praise I think is the key
Good luck

Hi all,

I too am about to start harness training over the winter on my two greys. Do you think being the age they are 2 years old and 3 years old it's still young enough.

Also what have people used as way of food treats on every step of harness training?

Thanks

I use a shelled sunflower seed, I break them in half with my nail as I give them to him as they are high in fat and I dont want him to have too many of them. I get the ones for humans as they dont have the shells on :)  (Tesco have them)

I think either they will accept the harness or they wont - my previous parrot as about 12 months old when I tried him with it, and he wouldn't accept it, but if I had kept trying, you never know, he might have, I gave up too soon I think.
Good luck with yours

Thanks thats great advice! Always have plenty of sun flower seeds in as I sprinkle them on my salads.

I'm pretty anxious about starting them with harness training, as I can be a bit fumbly and not as assertive as I should be.

Cheers.
