Advice for a novice please
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:34:07 AM »

Hi, i am new to this forum and also parrot ownership. We have had our African grey since saturday afternoon and he is a fostered two year old. he has settled in fairly well and much better than i anticipated. At the moment he comes out of his cage and sits on top of it happily talking and whistling away. He will fly to me (not on request) and when he perches on my shoulder, I can get him to step up in order to get off. But i cant get him to step up from on top of his cage. Also i have a playstand perch in the room which is gradualy getting nearer his cage as i want him to go on there. Any tips? Eventually then he can go on the playstand and be in the dining room and another one we have in the lounge.

Hi there, he probably just needs a bit of time - he's got a lot to take in and he hasn't been with you long. It'll only be a matter of time before he'll want to explore and go everywhere :D

hi and welcome

how's chester settling in now? any luck with him stepping up off his cage yet? why not wait until he flies to you, make a fuss of him then see if he will step down onto the playstand,do things at his pace and you'll make steady progress

Have you tried tempting him with a treat and when he's done what you want then give it to him as a reward .
You are right to get him off your shoulder ......dont let him on there ......if he ever goes through 'a phase' , a shoulder is a great vantage point for him to get your eyes and face and ears !
