African grey unusual sounds.
« on: February 18, 2014, 03:40:11 PM »

hello all.

I am very concerened about my African Greys unusual sounds as i like to call them.

Is this normal? Sounds like his wind tunnel maybe ruptured.

Will this bird ever be able to pick up real words?

wow thats a relief.
i wonder where he picked that up.

I only had him since a day now.

I am not sure of his age but I know his eyes have a yellow outline thus making him older than 2 years?

please tell me. will he learn real words? if so whats the best way?

they pick up all sorts of sounds, not all greys talk but if you talk to him lots he will hopefully begin copying you, they usually begin to copy words about a year to 18 months of age, many do earlier though. It may still be young. He/she is lovely by the way :)

where did you get him from & where are you based? You should really get a health check done at an avian vet, it must be avian, have you located a vet yet?

I suggest you read everything you can on African Greys so you have wider knowledge. Do you have any other birds?

Thanks again for the quick reply.

I do a lot of YouTube watching on taming AGs and their behaviour.

I am actually in Baghdad, IQ ... Here things are a bit different. People arent animal friendly however there are the crowds that love them.

People do advise on how to treat them but Arabs have their nasty habit of toweling and roughing a bird to submission that's so cruel! I would never do it.

I am curious about your conclusion about his age. I am told when his outer ring is yellow he is now 2+ years of age. is this not correct?

I live in an apartment on the 6th floor and although I work from 8 to 4 i leave the TV on for him on Animal planet.

His health is good. For the most part he is 90% tame but still bites. very annoying and mean bites.
he would get up on my arm but he wouldnt look like he's comfortable it appears as though when he's on the arm like he's ready to fly. doesnt appear to be comforting for him.

I really would love it if he would even speak ONE word. to start with at least.
people say to play a recording 15 minutes morning and 15 minutes at night with a repeated sentence.

their eye colour begins to change at around 7/8 months of age eventually changing to yellow at 1.5 to 2 years so it could be 2 but could be slightly younger or older, if you've only had him a day its unlikely he'll talk yet even if he can, give it time, it'll take him a while to trust you.

Look around the forum, there's lots of information :)

Hehe sounds normal to me. And kazky has covered most of it already. He is just repeating sounds he has heard. They pick up anything! Mine even picks up my farting :)
