Bathing tips??
« on: January 31, 2017, 04:28:12 PM »

Hi!

My feathered friend is settling in well now (had him nearly 3 weeks) and he is even stepping up with a little help from some treats :-) I'm desperate to bath him.. I've caught him splashing about in his water bowl (just his feet) so I put a cat littler tray in his cage and filled it with water to see if he'd use it... He wont. My problem is I don't want to  rush him as he is prone to feather plucking. He has no feathers on his tail, wings or chest, although they are growing back slowly! I almost took him to my kitchen sink earlier to bath him but I don't want to rush him or loose his trust. He has this chalky residue on his back and i believe he has never had a bath before (he was neglected for at least 10 weeks before I adopted him) Whats the best way to go about his please?
Thank you!

Get a small hand garden spray, fill it with tepid water ,set it on very fine  spray(practice in the sink with it first )so you don't shock him .Leave him in the cage and spray him downward from as far as your arm will stretch up therefore just letting the water globals fall on him and not blasting him&  see what reaction you get .There are other methods  which others on here may use too with success.

I tried the spray and he doesn't like that either! I think he associates it with the feather plucking spray his previous owner used to spray him with.  I used the tray as a bath within his cage. I don't leave it in there, I just introduce it to him to try to get him to bathe. Do all greys have this chalky residue on them? It's like a fine white dust...

They do, it's called dander & it coats their feathers. They also have like dandruff sometimes caused from the feather shaft coating when moulting. Just try one spray, literally a squirt, then leave a day & do another one until you can build up to a couple of sprays. Hopefully he will start to accept it.

Use the spray bottle , spray once praise and treat
Next day spray twice praise and treat
He may not ever like it but he may tolerate it
Iv had a few that dislikes it at first but are now fine
Mine also like the human shower
Even if you can get him to the bathroom whilst you shower as the steam will help x
