Charlie Training Today - Video Clip
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:31:31 AM »

This is Charlie we haven't done any training for ages to be honest so it was a run through of all the basic things he has learned.  Some of the things he does are very useful, like touching a stick, you can see in the video that I want to get him on to his rope so I touch the rope with his stick and he goes there (eventually).  Putting the washer thing in a dish, that is really useful if your grey picks up something that he shouldn't have.  I usually give him a penny but didn't have one!  Anyway, this is Charlie......and me!

That was a great video Pat.
What do you treat Charlie with when your doin your training sessions?
My Charlie is so frightened of anything, I can't even get him to step on. What do you think the best way would be with my Charlie Pat with getting him to step up.? He's so scared bless him.  :cheekkiss:

Charlie is amazing.  :yahoo:

I treat him with chopped nuts or half a sunflower seed.  Never the same amount so sometimes if he's done really well, I'll give him a bigger piece, like in the video when he picked up that washer and flew over with it, bless him.  That is the first time he's done that I usually use a penny it's much smaller and manageable, so because he did well, he actually got a whole peanut!  Don't show him the treat, they are so clever that if they see what you have got, they will hold out for more or something different if they don't want what you are offering.

If your Charlie is afraid of your hand, then the best thing to do is to talk to him quietly while he is in his cage, put your hand towards him and if you see a change in him, whether he lunges, or looks afraid, however subtle that look is, just stop, stay still a while until he relaxes again and then turn and walk away.  In time you will be able to get closer and closer to him with your hand and hopefully he will step up.  By turning and walking away, you are showing him that you are no threat, so there was no need for him to panic, that's why you must stop and wait until he relaxes before walking away.

Thank you Pat.  :cheekkiss:I'll try that. I've been tempted to leave my hand in and talk to him after he's lunged at me to show him I'm not scared of him but like you say Pat, he sees me as a threat and has done since what happened with his wings.
He doesn't trust me and I could sit n cry.  :cry2: I love my birds so much but with Charlie he just doesn't seem to want the affection.  :cry2:
It looks like it's back to basics again for him and me. Bless him.
:ty Pat, your advice is great.
