Yes :) how do you start out doing it Mandi? He trusts me, he's really soft with me but I have no idea how to start?

Hi Steve

Over the last couple of months I've got Mamadou to lay down on command however he only does it when he wants to but basically he throws himself backwards at which point I say lay down now of course he kind of associates that with laying down but basically I'm holding him along his back but after a while he starts grabbing hold of my finger to pull himself up.

But Mandi's right its just about trust and that's not to say he doesn't trust you know I think it's more to do with the thought of him going backwards if you know what I mean.

Yes trust is key, but I think the bird has  to enjoy being on their back, Im teaching mine at the minute but I can see he's not really happy doing it, he always gets a treat for doing it even if its just for a second

Absolutely right Mandie the bird has really got to want to do it, with Mamadou it's more a case of him swinging off my hand acting crazy and me just using lay down as a command it's a bit like is foraging bucket he as a ball in there so I say "get the ball get the ball" well he dives head first and everytime he throws the ball out I go happy crazy of course now when he does it I say "Mamadou get the ball" and he gets it I've got know idea if he knows what I mean but to someone who ain't seen him do it before it's like he is doing coz I've told him to

It definitely depends on the bird, some are really happy on their backs, others hate it, when she was a about a year old my Yvie used to flick herself on her back & would stay on my hand for about a second, but that's the most she would do, now she won't even do that.
Unfortunately most tend not to be cuddly birds, but their personality more than makes up for that :)

I'll keep trying :) he does get paranoid but I know they are generally a paranoid bird.
I suppose Louie is still young at 13 months, some things take some time, building up confidence etc...

Haha Tony, Ozzy does the same thing, holds onto my finger upside down flapping and play attacking my hand, he's so gentle but it looks really aggressive, bless.
I'd love to see a vid of yours going for his ball, sounds really funny

Hi Mandie

I know what you mean about hanging off your finger and Mamadou screams like crazy shortly after getting Mamadou and obviously unsure of anything I spoke to his vet and she said it's him having fun, but like you say to someone seeing it for the  first time it looks horrendous.

I will try to record Mamadou getting his ball he is quite funny when he's doing it
