Game ideas for young cag
« on: January 30, 2012, 01:35:48 PM »

Hi, I'm just after some ideas to amuse Freddie when he's out the cage! Hes only about 13.5 weeks old  but was wondering what games are good for a parrot of his age!
I've been doing recall with him and making him stay at his perch for longer periods in between ( he was just constantly flying to me before so thought I could use it to my advantage :-) ) any help would be appreciated

Have a look at some of the training videos, you can teach him any of those and it's all playing.

Hi pat :-) love watching your videos you put up!  Will any of them be ok to try and teach a grey that's so young?  And also should I wait until he's mastered one before trying to teach another?
I think I will try touch the stick, and drop it, both ones that will be handy and useful for him to be able to do :-)

Yes, start straight away.  If you are trying to train your Grey, then you only have a 10 - 15 minute window maybe twice a day to do that, the best time is in the morning before you give breakfast, then you have your nut as a treat for him, just break off little pieces, I use half a walnut or pecan and once that's gone, that's the training over, you can train him much better then because he will work for the nut.  Again in the afternoon before his evening meal, you can do the same thing.  Only work with him for about 10 minutes though, he's going to get bored, you are going to get frustrated and it will end up with him hating training and you in a mood.  You have to finish on a high with training, so that it will be fun next time he comes out to do it.

When Charlie does the "Shake it on down!" I started that from day one. he was 14 weeks old and when he fluffed up his feathers, I said "Shake it on down!" everytime he did it I said the same thing, always use the same words for the same actions, he soon picked it up.  He shook, I said "Shake it on down!" and then praised him up like a loony, he soon got the message and I think he did that within a day or so.  If you see him do something that you think is good, say something everytime he does it and he'll soon associate actions with words.

I would get him good at one before you start another, or he might just get confused.

Lol that's exactly the same as me when he flys across to me when I call him and when he steps down off me!  Im praising like a loony! That was the most tricky so far as he just didn't want to get off me, I looked like a self garner with the scratches all up my arms lol!  I keep trying to end on a good note! I think I have picked up quite a lot from your videos they really do help especially to get the just of things :-)   He is my first bird, I've always wanted a grey since I was a kid so Freddie was a treat to my self lol :-) just wanna make sure I give him the best start so I can try and avoid problems later on  :-)
Thanks for your help, I'll keep us posted how I get on

You'll be fine but don't work him more than 10 - 15 minutes because you will get frustrated, he will get bored and you'll end up finishing on a bad note and he won't want to do it again.  Twice a day is plenty, just before breakfast and just before supper...

Right I'll remember that too  15 mins no more :-) there's been a few times and I have noticed him starting to lose interest so I've done it one more so it's on a high and stopped there then had a little cuddle lol
