Going Potty!
« on: October 07, 2013, 10:02:23 AM »

I know this thread has probably been done before, but I was wondering how you guys potty trained your birds? What methods you used?

I am very fortunate enough to never having to potty train Chewy. When he was a baby he pooped everywhere and I just tolerated it, however from 3 years old onwards (he is 6 now) I noticed he was on my lap for long periods, I figured if I see him do a wiggle I would put him back but he never did. So I just put him back in his cage/play gym and he pooped straight away! After a few experiments I realised Chewy does not want to poop on me and would avoid pooping on me at all costs! Aww how sweet!

I have never praised him or given him treats for not unloading on me, he just knows simply not to poop on me. Funny now that I put him back in his cage he poops then says "you poo poo, ewwww! Gross!"    what a clever little boy!

Curious question for those who have not potty trained their birds. Do yours avoid pooping on you as well?

Awww bless Chewy, such a good birdie

I have 5 birds and none of them are potty trained. They all have free range as they're in their own room so they just richard the third everywhere, they'll also richard the third on me at any given opportunity :puke

Hehe. Glad I'm not the only one. Been trying to teach Ruby but doesn't seen too keen on 'getting' it! Now use a clicker and a treat but only occasionally goes on her own free will, followed by a click click noise to let me know!!  Perseverance is the key with ruby 'cos she sure is stubborn!
Still, the vax gets a good work out.

Good luck

Peach will never poop on me, it's not something iv taught her
She just chooses not too :cheekkiss: she clearly loves me

Echo for some reason won't do her morning poop in her cage so I have to get her out every morning n I sit her on the back of the kitchen chair n she will deposit it on the kitchen floor  don't ask me why or how I worked this out
The rest will just do it anywhere
Casper sometimes even decides to do his morning one out the front of the cage :puke:
And it's massive :panic:

Ooh interesting ladies. Thanks for the input. Why do you think a bird chooses not to poop on a person? He would hold it in for as long as long as he could. He doesn't poop on my hubby either and my hubby isn't his fave person but however Chewy respects my hubby and greets him when he comes home from work or say bye bye when hubby goes work.

My Yvie is the same, she won't poop on me, my kakariki will poop on me all day long and my cockatiel is not averse either, glad they poop small though, at least I don't have an Yvie sized poop on my shoulder when I go shopping......!

They should make glue out of it because it's impossible to remove

Well done Chewy xxxxx
