Hi and HELP!
« on: November 02, 2014, 11:10:50 PM »

Evening all :)
Not sure if this is the correct place but I guess in the end my post will be looking for training tips amongst much more.... Sorry!
So here goes. We have been looking to get ourselves an African Grey for a while now and did some basic research like was it right for us etc. But it was all very basic. Tut Tut to us. After hunting and being let down copious times we found a little girl who needed a new home. So 3 days ago my partner did the drive and went and collected our new baby. We was curious about her background and what not so then started the real research. We found she has a split ring on her left leg with some numbers and letters after looking on this site I am left feeling a little confused (Easily done) So it seems her tag says 10796 zv 13. (the 13 is sideways) This sort of indicates her birth 2013. Which does not tally with the info we was given when bought. We was told she is 2.5 years old. Her eyes are lovely white with a hint of grey.We was told she is very very tame. She is a talker and mimicker but I assume new environment and new people means she is far from Tame right now although we are getting her to step up on occasion when she is not after biting our hands, fingers etc. We are not sure if she is sexed so plan to do this once she is fully trustful with us.
My main questions are.... Is her behaviour right now normal for a newly re homed Grey? Given her previous home was a quiet home and she had free roam of the garden and enjoyed sitting outside the window for hours on end. If so how can we get her to trust us without causing too much stress on her?? And of course the tag. Does this tag mean she is imported?? Or Bred?? Trying to learn as much as we can from our new feathered friend and hoping you guys can guide us with training and helping this little one out :)

Hi and welcome
Can I ask did you see her 'tame and friendly' with her old owners ?
Did you ask much of her routine etc ?
You say she has stepped up so that's something to work on
It is early days and yes it's normal behavior she is showing at the moment
As for a split ring I have no idea as the ones of mine that are rung have solid rings
But 13 could be the year by the look of things
Can I ask a name :)
And here's a few basics
Start as you mean to go on with a good routine (bed time n wake time etc)
And invest in a uv lamp (avian specific) as they really do need one
Enjoy her xxx

Congratulations on your new baby  :yahoo:   You say she had free roam of the garden??? Please dont let her outside unless she is in a cage or on a harness - One slight fright and she would be off.

I was going to say the same thing Mandie, despite what the previous owners used to do, please never let your new baby outside without a harness or in a cage.

There are so many predators, and a scare means they'd fly straight up and away.

You're in the right place for the information you need, so you'll get there :)

So her Name is Coco, today she is stepping up on my partners hand and now allowing us to stroke her in 1 day her personality has transformed she is brimming in confidence.
No i will never let her out :)
So my partner saw her tame with the owner but the owner said she would never talk while on him and was very shy. Like i said today she is on my partners shoulders (I work till 9pm) talking away playing with some paper and eating food out of his mouth. As i have spent little time with her we didnt think she would step up on me but she did, she was nervous with me but put her head down and had a good stroke.
Cannot believe the change in her since this time yesterday she is not yet stepping up on the hand fully we have to use a stick to get her from her cage but once off the cage she will then do on the hand but getting there with her alot quicker than anticipated. Once on the shoulder she will not move and not step up on a hand or stick lol very stubborn puts her head doen for a stroke instead (And not the deceptive head down an actual real stroke me please)
We once owned a pair of indian ringnecks who we tempted to train for months and got no where so this is a huge difference and I am very impressed by her intelligence :)
